Constantly reinterpreting and synthesizing information so my takes become obsolete the minute I type them.
I saw Losurdo mentioned here and there, but thought he was either a Zizek-style meme (worthless) or like Spinoza and Hegel… not gonna read that shit while my ankles still work.
Turns out Losurdo is great; colonialism v anti-colonialism, a legitimately fantastic lens for viewing history.
So anyway, I started reading his Liberalism book and it’s honestly the funniest shit I’ve ever read, and perfectly expresses my frustrations with contemporary, imperial core “politics”
In order to discuss the history etc of liberalism, he tries to answer the question: what is liberalism?
To illustrate the difficulties, he just holds up different figures around colonial American times and is like
“this guy (often a founding father) went full :frothingfash: about how tyrannical monarchical rule is, and was at the same time a brutal slave owner. Is he a liberal?”
“This other guy said that “despotic” governments generally had laws restricting slave-owners in some regards, and consequently felt that slaves were better off in “despotic” regimes. Is he a liberal?”
“This other guy said slavery based on race was wrong, but endorsed slavery for vagrants and indigents. Is he a liberal”
On and on, pages and pages.
It’s honestly refreshing to see all these myths laid bare. Would definitely recommend for anyone who wants a “nuclear option” to ruin your relationship with family and friends
