Do we have any reason to believe that both Russia and Ukraine are actually interested in negotiating at this time? Like it would surprise me not at all if one or both sides were just content to duke it out for now.

Here are the things that both nations want:

Russia: Cede Crimea (maybe Donbas Republics??) No NATO ever, de-militarize De-Nazify and stop discrimination against Russian minorities

Ukraine: Sovereignty and not annexation Full withdrawal of Russian forces

These things aren’t in direct conflict, so a peace is theoretically possible. However, what’s holding it back currently is that Ukraine is listening to Washington who tells them to never surrender, more aid is coming. They also resist giving up territory (obviously). They also will probably kick and scream about their Nazi friends and try to save them.

Tbh I think the Nazi's aren't a major factor myself. I think that they'll take some heavy losses during this fighting, but I don't think Putin cares enough to make it a sticking point, and I don't think Ukraine wants that in the history books so they'll just play dumb about it.

"Denazification" in Ukraine, as well as "democratisation" of Iraq, is propaganda terms meant to justify the war. In practice it can mean everything, from shooting every last Nazi in the Ukraine to just dissolving the Azov battalion. As long as Russia gets something with a denazification label on it they'll be happy

I think the nationalist appeal is exactly why he made it part of his speech and is going to make it a mission objective, but I think recognizing and protecting an independent Donbass does the trick there, which I would expect to happen.

He’s going to need to publicly trial and punish some Nazis, for domestic propaganda at the least. That was one of the casus belli and from what I’ve seen on Russian telegram they care about it a lot

      We don't, they probably aren't

There was a meeting a few days ago that went nowhere, and I think another one is scheduled within the next 12 hours
