I feel just a little bad for anyone who watches the news all day and still thinks Ukraine is winning, but I kind of would like to see the gormless look on their face when this is over. Might make people question the media they consume. But I doubt it.
They won't ever understand. When this is over and results in the continuance of a Ukrainian state (but neutral) they will be told that was because of sanctions and because the russians couldn't take it. It will be spun as a victory over an invader trying to take over the country and annex it.
They will see it all as having been a great battle to a valiant success. The west will use it to reinforce perceptions of how great and united it is. Everything will be fake and plastic as fuck, liberals will know this deep down but play the game anyway. Yaaaaaaay democracy beats the authoritarian conquerors! Nazis? What nazis?
Literally everything that contradicts the narrative is "russian propaganda" now. Nothing except the EXACT narrative provided is acceptable, everything else is dismissed as propaganda and disinformation. The imperialist fake narrative is the ONLY true "information", everything else is disinformation.
Even Mussolini would blush at the invented world they're creating.
The narrative will be like that of the Finnish Winter War against the Soviets. They very obviously lost but if you ask the average westerner who has heard of the war they'd say Finland won because there is a Finland today, and they might've heard of Finland's OG Ghost of Kyiv-style myth.
I understand that their territory losses were significant, but USSR casualties were so massive that I feel like it's a bit of a wash rather than an "obvious loss".
i feel like it might result in a bunch of "the brave troops were winning but were stabbed in the back by cowardly (((politicians)))" takes and im pretty sure history shows us that theres no way that sort of thing could end badly

Thing is, it doesn't even need to be all that widespread; once you've got a not-insignificant amount of armed Nazis, as Ukraine absolutely does, it turns out it's really hard to get rid of them. Political power grows from the barrel of a gun, or so I'm told, and you can make a surprising amount of demands, or make claims without any higher authority's permission once you have a pack of violent, well-armed brownshirts at your disposal. Even if they never accede to a significant place of state power, they absolutely have the ability to terrorize their local area, and it will turn out the central government's own mechanism for the enforecement of its authority (ie the cops) will pretty much stand aside, out of sympathy or cowardice.
