It's unclear if the Senate will take up the legislation, as Democratic leaders remained noncommittal on Tuesday. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said he would personally support putting it on the floor, but questioned whether there's enough time on the calendar with the Senate set to go on an extended recess in two weeks and two huge party priorities to finish before then.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer would not say Tuesday if there would be a floor vote but said, “we're going to look at everything we can do.”

THE HOUSE ACTUALLY PASSED IT. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS IS WHAT THEY'RE COMING FOR NEXT, BUT HE WANTS TO FOCUS ON PARTY PRIORITIES. BITCH HOW IS THIS NOT A PRIORITY?

AHHHHH :this-is-fine:

Dem leadership didn't want it the first time around. They had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, by a billionaire (Geffen) funded grassroots movement. This isn't ancient history, it's the Obama years. Of course they're not going to protect it. Most of them don't like gay marriage and think it hurts the party.

Obama refused to show his support for gay marriage out of fear it would hurt him. Hillary, during the Bush years, said she believed marriage was between a man and a woman. This isn't ancient history for the ghouls, they know damn well they don't care.

Yup and then the whole 2016 media narrative was how Bernie’s supporters are all toxic straight boys whilst all the gays are with Hillary, cuz, you know, HRC is spelled just like HRC!

        The queen of DOMA.

Meanwhile throughout 2015-16 gay fan boys were obsessed with posting pictures of the various kinds of hideous outfits she could be seen in. Swooning over the sartorial sense of the handlers and PR army of one of the most outspoken Dems against gay marriage. Pathetic .

Pitiful how the cult of personality and identity politics could have foisted her up as the embodiment of forward, liberal woman breaking the glass ceiling. Boomer women and gay men bough the whole thing hook, line and sinker.

I vote third party just to piss off the liberals who think I'm "throwing my vote away" (we all are) and to make someone count it. I just tell them "I vote based on policy and socialist/green party is the closest to my views", and really use that enlightenment freedom of choice shit against the libs. Drives them nuts.

The 4 years of blaming Jill Stein for Trump was hilarious, hope we get it again in 2024 when our wet boy comes back.

I 100% agree but involving yourself in those kinds of campaigns is a great way to get organized with people in your community around a coherent set of political beliefs. Your candidate always eats shit in the end anyway lol

Again I agree with you that voting is not going to solve the world's issues. Forgive me if you've seen this quote before but reading this is what made me believe that voting for socialists is still worth the effort anyway (barring like 8hr voter suppression lines on a workday of course):

Even where there is no prospect of achieving their election the workers must put up their own candidates to preserve their independence, to gauge their own strength and to bring their revolutionary position and party standpoint to public attention. They must not be led astray by the empty phrases of the democrats, who will maintain that the workers’ candidates will split the democratic party and offer the forces of reaction the chance of victory. All such talk means, in the final analysis, that the proletariat is to be swindled. The progress which the proletarian party will make by operating independently in this way is infinitely more important than the disadvantages resulting from the presence of a few reactionaries in the representative body.

              It's from here: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/communist-league/1850-ad1.htm

(I would suggest just Ctrl-F bc this doc is long as hell haha)

besides the point that Marx makes in that quote, elections are also useful to revolutionary parties because they can serve as a soap box. if even a single candidate stands out and is popular that is already a huge win for the party, no matter if they get elected or not.

    doing my best @NeeraTanden impression

Expecting the democrats to perform their jobs is emotional labor. It requires interacting with Joe Manchin, an annoying cis het white man. And therefore you can't force Democrats to actually use their power.

I was curious too so I found an article from a couple days ago. Climate and tax reform is dead since Manchin refuses to negotiate, so they list 4 priorities before the August recess:

      1. Prescription drug price reduction and ACA subsidies (originally part of the reconciliation package)
      2. Semiconductor funding to counter China
      3. Electoral reform!...to make the VP a ceremonial figure in election certification (i.e. continued Jan 6 hysteria)
      4. Healthcare funding for veterans exposed to burn pits

Let's not conflate the reactionary agenda of these puppets of the rich with popular homophobia. Even many people who are homophobic "on some level" still support the protection of gay marriage. If this was just put to a direct referendum, it would win overwhelmingly.
