I don't even know if it is miseducation. Like some programs obviously are but I think it's more about training, debt, and class mobility than lying to people.

I think it is. We teach history in a way that absolutely annihilates many people's rationality, we teach literature in a way that elides almost all of the actually important points that many authors make, etc. etc. It's also those other things for sure, but it's also to construct a specific ideological attitude.

When the NSDAP seized the German assets of the Rothschilds in the 1930s, worth 43M Reichsmark, they sold them to banker August von Finck for 6M Reichsmark. He made most of these 6M back by simply pocketing the savings of the bank's Jewish clients.

This is how fascist "anti-capitalism" works. You take from the undesirables and give it to the party's donors.

BTW von Finck got to keep all of these stolen riches after the war. He then moved to Switzerland and his son later used the family's nazi riches to finance the far-right AfD party in Germany.

That the CIA is evil. Libs might try to pretend it's conspiracy nonsense or might even try to defend the CIA. In my experience, if you start talking about real CIA conspiracies around chuds, though, they get into it. The tough part I guess is convincing them that Republicans including Trump are complicit in those same evil deeds.

The real problem with this kind of person is that they refuse to accept that this is just what America always was. The freedoms that it was ostensibly founded on were only ever actually supposed to be for it's most wealthy & established participants.

I feel like this is the one pop culture issue where I have the most overlap with chuds. TLJ, bad. The Force Awakens? Also bad. Solo? Bad.

I liked Rogue One. It was bad too, but bad in a way that I still enjoyed it. Like Revenge of the Sith.

Not because they're "woke" or because "women and male feminists are trying to steal Star Wars from white men." But because they're uncreative corporate products and poorly told stories.

The rest of this is just whining that I'm a little embarrassed of but not so embarrassed that I'll delete it

(and, by that metric, TLJ was actually one of the best ones. It was trying to be creative, sometimes. It was just really bad at it). I have not watched and will not watch Rise of Skywalker or any of their Disney+ shows. Though I've seen clips from them and won't hesitate to deem them bad without actually watching them. Even the clips I saw from Mandolorian just seemed awful. I've been hearing good things about the new Andor show, but it's too late to go back now. Fuck em. I even read a bunch of the books in 2015/2016, and they were even worse than I would've thought.

Exactly two good pieces of art have come out of Disney Star Wars, and they're both novels by Alexander Freed. One's a tie-in to the spin-off game Battlefront, literally titled Star Wars: Battlefront: Twilight Company. The other is the novelization of Rogue One. And they're both weirdly good pieces of character-driven adventure fantasy. A tie-in to a spin-off. Those aren't even meant to be good, they're meant to make a cheap buck. I've read a lot of media tie-in novels in my life, and nearly all of them have been dogshit. Entertaining, sometimes*. But never good. Just seems like some strange miracle that the only bit of new Star Wars media I like comes from the least likely source. It's like... imagine a band you used to like puts out an album you hate, but then you happen to read the little booklet that comes with the CD and find it to be a moving piece of art all on its own.

*I was a teenager when I read most of them and had a much higher dogshit tolerance.

They honestly weren't. Being more like the slop we've had in the past would not have made the slop better, see the painfully dull Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi wasn't even particularly subversive. It's not even the Disney Wars movie that most subverted expectations, Rogue One easily has it beat.

And Rise of Skywalker shows so solidly that there was no plan for the overall plot of those movies, Disney just gave it to two guys who hate each other and said “good luck” before fucking with it even more

A few. First, the “who’s profiting off this war?” MIC plot line. Rey’s parents being nobodies. The idea that “the Jedi kinda sucked, actually.” That kid at the end using the force on his broom.

All good ideas with a real mediocre execution. But all of it was either ignored completely in Rise of Skywalker, or actively undone. Even concepts as simple as Kylo Ren not wearing his helmet anymore because he’s changed are undone immediately.

Literally the only one of those that’s well-trodden ground is “the Jedi kinda suck.” The top force-using characters have always had a bloodline. The concept of a military industrial complex profiting off both sides had never shown up before.

I believe that a person's gender and sexuality can be influenced by external factors and are not fully determined at birth. The fact that "conversion therapy" exists and doesn't work makes this a controversial take. But conversion therapy is literally just abuse, it's like saying, "A bunch of idiots tried hitting gay people with sticks to make them be straight and it didn't work, this is proof that sexuality is purely innate." That's not proof, that's just a way to get the idiots to stop hitting us with sticks, and while there are idiots with sticks around, it's very reasonable to be touchy about this.

But gender is a social construct, so how is it possible that a newborn infant who has had no exposure to society already has a particular social construct that they identify and one or more social constructs that they will inevitably be attracted to once they grow up? Also, we can clearly observe standards of beauty changing over time and across different cultures. Of course the standards of the culture that you're raised in will influence what traits you find attractive, and it feels arbitrary to draw a line at gender. But these are general trends and the ways in which an individual relates to the dominant culture they're raised in are complex and varied. Maybe someday, once all the idiots with sticks have been gulag'd, people (ideally queer people) can study this sort of thing from a descriptivist, sociological perspective, with the rights and validity of queer people viewed completely as a given.

Until then, the discourse is dragged down to chud level and the priority is saying whatever it takes to get them to put down the fucking stick.

Genetic determinism in general is sus. Predisposition is a thing, sure, but the world is a chaos vortex and we're sapient participants in it. Any number of environmental/social/personal forces can potentially tip the scales.

The realization of any particular trait is at all times & moments a dialectic relationship between the inherited genetic structure of a given organism, and the environment into which it has been placed. Generally, any real discussion of the relationship these things share & how to best account for them is both impossible to have because of, and is also inextricably tied to, specific goals of political economy & of the matter of class rule.

(Incidentally it occurs to me that I should be specific; I mean that it's often impossible to have a serious discussion about questions regarding gene-environment interactions & to discuss, more than simple inheritance, how specific traits actually come to be realized. And I think it's impossible to really get down to the bottom of that question, because the capitalist class & their courtiers in the popular discourse of science are at all times more concerned with justifying their social positions more than answering questions about the actual functioning of biological mechanisms.)

also the "queer stuff is ok because it's natural and we don't have a choice" is fallacious thinking. some serial killers probably don't have a choice in theirnature but that doesn't make murder acceptable.

But gender is a social construct, so how is it possible that a newborn infant who has had no exposure to society already has a particular social construct that they identify

the social constructs of gender might be a labelling system for a mental component of what we categorize as biological sex; that would exist in humans who were raised by wolves or aliens or whatever and didn't receive the signs and signifiers. Some nonbinary genders are very old in some cultures but some of the ideas for specific subsets of nonbinary are of recent coinage and there are surely long-dead humans who would've identified with xenogenders or any yet-to-be-delineated terminology if only they had the words to describe themselves at the time. like how there were always ace people even though societies didn't necessarily recognize them on the same footing as the allo orientations.

TBH, this is an odd way to think of it, to me. I don't know that I understand it. I also don't really vibe with the idea that gender is something that you can have personal agency over; any more than you can have direct personal agency over your social identity, or "place in society" broadly speaking. It's always going to be a negotiation between what you're materially capable of doing, and what terms other people are prepared to accept in interacting with you; and at least in my experience the latter usually takes precedence.

every libertarian I've met has instantly failed the test of expressing sympathy for Latin Americans from all the instances of US intervention. so I really have to doubt how serious they are about their anti-war stances. At most I've only ever heard them talk about ending whatever war is most topical, like they were some level of against the Iraq War but I don't remember them doing much about it other than voting for Ron Paul.

my cousin is a self-identified libertarian and he says US intervention into Latin America either never happened or it was deserved because the US was helping people by eliminating dictators. yeah ok sure
