"After the G-20 sessions were over there was a party at the West Lake. The Chinese had laid a transparent sheet over the water and ballerinas performed Swan Lake on the water. Theresa May repeated that it was so wonderful and that it was 'only possible in a dictatorship'"

I remember people saying similar stuff at the 2008 Olympics, that the opening ceremony was only so good and well-practiced because of authoritarian mind control.

If any nominally leftist country had marching bands, they would claim it's because the people have had their individuality stripped out of them by the system. But when football fans prepare a mosaic or a chant, that's just dudes coming together as one.

Most of them likely spend most of their time exclusively surrounded by people who are trying to out maneuver them for power, influence, and access and are either fanatically loyal to the point where they will turn on anyone at the orders of their leader, or so self serving that no one at all is safe around them.

Sure as hell was. Makes me feel so old though, the new Three Body Problem show constantly uses it as a device to remind viewers that it's 2008. It's 15 years ago. How the hell did that happen? I want my shitty flip-phone with the snake game back

Xi told Abe that if he (Xi) were american he wouldn’t join the communist party he’d join the democrats or the republicans, Abe says this is because Xi is a realist.

Is this an indictment of Xi or an indictment of every communist party in America I can't decide

This sounds like Xi knows that the US is set up to have a two party system and that even if a communist party gained traction in votes/representatives it would simply become the Democrats or Republicans without a mass movement behind it. No current leftist party in America has a mass movement to ride on or lead

Xi Jinping is nothing if not very practical

Xi himself was sent to the countryside as a manual laborer, this is a dude who can harvest a field, write a treatise, govern a state all in one.

And it doesn't even make sense in a chess context.

Also, real nice to just throw the "I don't know why Korean people are so apprehensive and short with Japan in International affairs... wonder why that is :wonder-who-thats-for: ". Real "I don't understand why women are so angry and unreasonable, i'm just asking questions, bro" vibes.

Right. You don’t take a valuable piece just because you can. You’re supposed to look ahead and see whether the piece will eventually lead to victory or just a stall

And sure, they take a piece, you take one, and in most cases you're going to have equal material, but if that's your level of understanding of chess and/or geopolitics, good luck dealing with anyone with barely any strategic thinking.

Says Obama is difficult to forge a friendship with, they only talked about work

Of course Obama is a nerd who can't turn off. I mean, I kind of am one, too, but that's why I sought to have an interesting job (to me) and more importantly, I don't have to make lasting relationships with world leaders by using charisma and diplomacy in order to do well at it. I'm just some dork with passable social skills.

Xi is ruthlessly pragmatic and while he is a committed marxist, he is not a revolutionary. That’s generally a good thing in a country post-revolution. I’m not surprised if this is actually true.

It’s an interesting “what if”. I could see him on the left flank of the party, like a more competent Sanders. Then again, growing up in Amerika also means he’d most likely end up with more conservative/ pro-capitalist views. Hard to say.

“ I’d join the Republican Party”

yeah might have just been him viewing both parties as similar because of their imperialism or knowing he was talking to a rightwinger.

In a country struggling to overcome colonialism and imperialism, “Nationalist first” honestly makes sense. Whatever is best for the people, they’re going to go with, you know?

Socialism is of course the best system for meeting those needs, but I understand the commitment to people over ideology. Hopefully that makes sense.

I would imagine it just means "I would join the predominant political parties with an ability to do something" and not specifically that he would like the republicans.
