Yeah it's still very :doomer: that they didn't even try to fight for Roe. Like... holy shit.

You don't understand. By throwing more than half the country under the bus they toxified the republican brand electorally, which will allow them to win more marginal seats in order to get important legislation passed like compromising with fascists on only the partial eradication of minorities from public life.

There's a quote out there that I can't find right now from I believe the civil rights era that says the problem with voting in the USA is that the moment you cast your vote, you lose all your power. Once they've got your vote, you become unable to affect their policies.

The quote puts it much more elegantly, if anyone knows it I'd love to have it again.

That's one of the core messages in Malcom X's "The Ballot or the Bullet"

Don't be throwing out any ballots. A ballot is like a bullet. You don't throw your ballots until you see a target, and if that target is not within your reach, keep your ballot in your pocket.

What's weird to me is how overall unpopular alot of the anti trans and general anti LGBT shit is for regular people. This seems like a very bad move politically on top of morally. I don't really get it. I mean I guess trying to rationalize libs is a losing battle tho

It’s so insane. Like, for the low price of a token piece of civil rights legislation the Dems could take a big lead just because everyone hates this shit. If they codified the right to an abortion they’d rule for decades.

Literally playing T ball and missing over and over again as a grown adult.

Is it unpopular? I'm witnessing a huge increase in ambient transphobia. I think most of it is unexamined and doesn't have real commitment behind it, but that's not any different than most peoples' political inclinations.

In my experience, Boomer libs (the only base democrats actually pander to) are pretty transphobic.

Criminalizing gender affirming care seems to be crossing the line for them, but they’re pretty TERF-y about inclusivity.

I've seen some polls suggesting it is pretty unpopular. Lots of blue seats were won againdt major transphobes these last two years in some surprising places. I also think anecdotally having to hear anyone irl harp on about trans hate or LGBT hate is extremely off-putting for everyone. Most of my family is right wing and there is only 1 person in my whole extended family that will randomly bring up trans issues and everyone tells them to shut up lol. It's just not a real concern for a lot of people.

The thing is too is this type of hate is way more prevalent online, we've been bombarded with it. But when the right has actual sieg heiling nazis showing up to rallies/protests against drag its an extremely bad look for even the less moderate right wingers.

I think it depends too on where you live. Some places are definitely just always going to hafe anyone not cis

More specifically what I'm seeing is a lot of the dudes I interact with making more jokes where the punch line is that trans people exist. It's like I'm living in a 1990s comedy skit. But, like I said, I don't think there's any commitment behind it. They're just hearing a lot more right wing propaganda about trans people and they're not used to finding out that ideas they're used to might not reflect everyone's life and experience.

Yeah absolutely there has been a lot of fucking chuds who've been emboldened by it. But for me personally, I work with a lot of chuds, fam is all chud, I live near chuds and it's just not a pressing issue like so much other stuff I see. But that doesn't matter that much when some of the most powerful people in state governments can push through shit that their base may not give a shit about. They've really been on a crusade and it's fucked no matter how many of their voters actually care.

It depends on a lot of things. The trans athlete ban is probably the most popular one. Everything else like banning transitioning for adults or the Florida trans child laws are unpopular outside of deranged chuds.

I don't think this achieves anything in terms of voter appeal that simply doing nothing would not have also done.

After years of hateful barrages from republicans that seem to have surprisingly little traction, republicans seem to be doing surprisingly badly running for office on this. So republicans haven't been able to win political power to do something like this. So Biden's just going to give them something anyway? This is fucking stupid. Can you imagine a republican just giving the left something we want? Fuck, can you imagine democrats giving the left something we want?

extremely revealing of the centrist brain that anyone could frame this as a "compromise." with whom? it's an executive agency. democrats control the executive branch. you're ceding power to people who have no leverage.

They have the Senate and the Presidency. How is this not just flat BLOCKED from ever getting to Biden in the first place?

Then these Democrats have the nerve to brow beat progressives who won't :vote: for them.

This type of waffling from "The Top" weakens any Democrat down the line trying to protect trans rights. It throws red meat to the fascists and signals it's open season on the queers right when 2024 campaign season starts getting in gear.

Then you got the DSA simpletons that try to hand wave away and play "harm reduction" with the libs by being a de-facto arm of the DNC to prevent progressive escape to other more welcoming parties.
