NOOOOOO please don't be true

I was just thinking about how Zelda is the one Nintendo franchise that could actually make for a good animated movie and how bad of an idea it would be to let Illumination make it.

Link will have the thick faux-italian accent that Mario should have had. Bafflingly, he'll be both voiced by and modeled after Chris Pratt as well. No explanation will be given.

Mainstream Zelda fandom is so primed and trained to take in recycled nostalgia feelz that the only way it doesn't make at least a billion dollars is if it tries to do something new with the franchise. :debord-tired:

OK wait. You've previously expressed distaste for Zelda games that change the formula. Not just BOTW, on which I partially agree, but also ALBW, on which I significantly disagree. So which is it? Not trying to be confrontational I'm just confused.

You’ve previously expressed distaste for Zelda games that change the formula.

          I did? :what-the-hell:

I said over and over again to exhaustion that I was tired of T H E P R O P H E C Y and of recursive repetitive story beats in the franchise that often involve rebooting/resetting/blowing up/flooding Hyrule in some way as well.

          So which is it?

I'm not talking about my personal preferences there. I'm talking about what the producers, director, and writers will have to do to make a surefire profitable thing and keep the mainstream fandom happy.

Your complaints about formula change were mechanical changes not plot ones, to be fair.

And I guess mechanics dont exist in a movie so, fair play.

I'm not even sure what you're saying here. Yes, I was talking about plot issues because I find the plots of most Zelda games exhaustive to go through because of the constant return to the plot obligations of a 90s game and its seemingly eternal demands on every Zelda game that came afterward.

I'm really have no idea what you're talking about when you claim I was complaining about formula changes that are "mechanical."

Maybe Im just bitter you didn't like ALBW's item buying mechanic but that was a mechanical formula change you said you didnt like. And you also dont like the BOTW style's mechanical changes so I figured you were a fan of the traditional, OOT or maybe LTTP style dungeon/key item formula.

That was a one-off one-time minor thing that annoyed me because it changed the focus too much for my preferences. Not all changes are to my liking, yes, guilty as charged. I just typically enjoy, in Zelda or otherwise, adventuring to find the item I need instead of grinding to buy it.

And you also dont like the BOTW style’s mechanical changes

Yes, both things can be true: I found BOTW's "Hyrule got reset again and Link has amnesia again and Zelda is in trouble again" plot repetitive and boring and weapons breaking simply isn't fun for me.

To give an example of a non-Zelda version of my stance on bad changes and plot repetition/recycling, Star Fox Zero (while it had a great opening cutscene that should have been its own show) recycled Star Fox 64 almost beat by beat for its plot, undid everything that happened in Star Fox after 64, and introduced an unpleasant and obnoxious change in its "must use the silly controller screen" targeting system.

                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwchN4_yR5E

Nintendo at a story level seems to prefer resets/reboots over letting a story continue with lasting changes that stick, and that's dull to me. Metroid was mostly spared, even if it involves contrived reasons for Samus to have to power up her suit all over again.

You know, thinking about the repetitive story of "Link and Zelda fight and destroy Ganon with the master sword and goddess magic", has me wanting a Zelda game where Ganon reincarnates as a wise and noble type character who knows what is supposed to happen and asks for Link and Zelda to help him literally beat fate and end the cycle. That would be pretty cool I think.

Miyazaki: Ganondorf is the avatar of capital and environmental disaster, slay him Link, for the love of God slay him or we will continue to endure this Hell...

Skull Kid from Majora's Mask is the avatar of nihilism and environmental apocalypse. Ganondorf is more of an anti-christ religious figure than anything to do with capitalism. Hyrule is locked into a feudal system by recurring demons fucking up all accumulations of capital before any other social structures can develop. Ganon/The Demon King prevents capitalism and keeps the world in eternal feudal idiocy. Ganondorf is an avatar of evil, a prophetic male Gerudo of flesh that steals power and becomes the evil God he was destined to become. He never is killed, only sealed or banished or sent to another dimension or something similar - he will always come back in a couple generations.

If anything is a symbol for capital, it's the triforce - which is godly omnipotence objectified and commodified into a physical item. The kingdom and society of Hyrule is peculiar and distorted because it's entire purpose is to lock away, protect and hide this object and keep it out of the hands of demons. Its more of a curse than a blessing because it doesn't really seem to do anything to help anyone but if seized by the Demons it unleashes tons of destruction.

          T H E P R O P H E C Y is about an inescapable recurring boom/bust cycle and it elevates the special chosen ones in the privileged class :capitalist-laugh:

the triforce can be used to bring good to the world, at the end of a link to the past it's used to reverse all the damage done by Ganon. However, hylians and other races usually fight for it when it isn't sealed away.

Yeah it can undo the damage the demons wrought with it. So best case scenario it undos some of its own damage. Wow awesome I love the triforce!

It can be used for basically anything, but most people with the power or influence to get it without violence can already do what they wanted to do with it. Like, Zelda has access in some games but she's already doing what she needs to do and is a princess, when the gorons are in trouble they either deal with it or someone fixes it so they don't need it, and so on. People outside these benevolent positions fight for it, which led to the shadow temple being full of bodies from civil war, and the triforce being sealed in the sacred realm and needing the ocarina of time and mastersword to be accessed. In skyward sword it was used to destroy demise, but then ghirahim timetraveled and Demise set his curse. So yeah basically it's only used for good reactively, as most positive things can be achieved in other ways and it's actively used for evil. On the brightside, the triforce of power is the only one that does anything useful, by magnifying your strength. And that's only sometimes.

1000% what I am wanting. I’d love to see another film just like that, perhaps a different direction of creative vision but yes, would love to see a Legend of Zelda meets Princess Monoke film that was inspired by animators who loved those things. I think there have been so many great films to inspire animators that would in turn inspire future animators. I think you get that real deal magically creativity when you let them pitch their own thing rather than commissioning them to do an existing IP. The only exception I can think of is Spiderverse

Zelda’s convoluted timeline was the OG multiverse. Your average slop enjoyer is going to love their annoying talking/quipping Link played by Ezra Miller. If it isn’t based off Windwaker I’m not watching it.

I liked Windwaker a lot, in fact it may be my favorite post-90s Zelda game, but even there they had to rehash T H E P R O P H E C Y and take away the fun pirate girl and replace her with the rehashed trio's forever conflict again. :debord-tired:
