Half a century ago, when Marx was writing Capital, free competition appeared to the overwhelming majority of economists to be a “natural law”. Official science tried, by a conspiracy of silence, to kill the works of Marx, who by a theoretical and historical analysis of capitalism had proved that free competition gives rise to the concentration of production, which, in turn, at a certain stage of development, leads to monopoly. Today, monopoly has become a fact. Economists are writing mountains of books in which they describe the diverse manifestations of monopoly, and continue to declare in chorus that “Marxism is refuted”. But facts are stubborn things, as the English proverb says, and they have to be reckoned with, whether we like it or not. The facts show that differences between capitalist countries, e.g., in the matter of protection or free trade, only give rise to insignificant variations in the form of monopolies or in the moment of their appearance; and that the rise of monopolies, as the result of the concentration of production, is a general and fundamental law of the present stage of development of capitalism.

THIS. Never forget how the first two Fallout games were just amazing. Didn't they also sabotaged Obsidian when they were making Fo:NV?

Bethesda also ruined TES, Skyrim is a fucking joke, the story is stale as fuck, you can't choose a genuinely good side (peasants revolution maybe?) because it's literally BOTH SIDE BADism but CHOOSE THE LESSER EVIL OR NORDIC TRUMP. It has completely thrown out RPG elements out, TES:III fucking kicks TES:V ass in that regard, even with the shitty combat system (as if Skyrim had anything remarkable good about combat). I still love Skyrim but it's not a good game unless you heavily (and I mean HEAVILY) mod it.

Fuck Bethesda and fuck Todd Howard. And no, I'm not a g*mer -- I'm a Communist Gamer.

It is subjective though. I liked Skyrim. Yeah there's stuff to be desired, but eh, still played it a lot. The combat is dogshit though.

tbf not being able to choose a good side isn’t a bad thing. been a while since i played morrowind but i don’t really remember there being any clear cut good guys there either. not all media needs to have “good guys vs bad guys”

it's annoying sometimes though, when i'm playing deadfire where i have to pick between looters, fascist imperialists, neoliberal imperialists and caste-based native societies where the lower castes literally have to eat trash, i mean... that's a tad bit too much

but i don't mind games like tyranny where that premise is set from the start

which seems like they may have fucked up

maybe the people behind the story don't think both sides are that bad

There are some mods that add back a lot of unfinished content that was removed and the story gets a bit better when you do that, but even then its still not great.

Honestly can't blame you for getting hyped. Games media would not shut up about that game, it was paraded around as the next big thing for months and given amazing review scores. Then a week afrer releaase no one talked about it

Pirated it to play for a few hours expecting to want to buy it, found it pretty lacklustre so I never bought it. I feel like we need the demo disks in cereal boxes again; lots of people buy into the hype and are out their one budgeted hobby purchase for the month

Microsoft purchased Zenimax (bethesda's publisher) MS now also owns ID Software (Quake & Doom), Arkane (Wolfestein& Prey), along with more studios that i do not recall the name of but include games such as Tokyo Ghostwire & Deathloop (both upcoming), Dishonored and Evil Within so this is huge

The fact that 3/4 of those games you listed originally came out 25(or 30) years ago and that's still their "bread and butter" is proof that "capitalism breeds innovation" is bullshit.

This is exactly it. Capitalists just assume that the Venn diagram of "profitable innovation" and "socially useful innovation" is a circle, but the evidence entirely refutes that. I mean really, it's only the idealists who believe that. Actual capitalist economists would see it how we see it, they just think we need to put "incentives" in place to correct it.

It's like how we have a desperate need for new antibiotics but none are being developed since it's not profitable. I mean there are a million examples but that was the first one that popped into my head.

These sons of bitches are going to crush Sony, aren't they? The writing is on the wall. Sony has been focused on the games admirably, but Microsoft is just going full on with the live service dystopia that will probably win out in the end. Not that either side wouldn't love to give it to the other, but those Microsoft cash reserves are the reality.

I actually think the xbox game pass is a pretty good value? for the price of buying 2 or 3 games per year, you get access to a pretty big catalog of AAA games and good selection high-quality indie titles, too.

      • Mrtryfe [none/use name]
        ·

Yeah, it's good value if you play more than a couple games a year. Microsoft is losing money on it, and they have the luxury to do so. They're going to loss lead their way to swallowing a huge chunk of the market share when it comes to live services.
