Goddamnit, this is why politicians are getting on board with decriminalizing drugs and sending users to "rehab programs" instead isn't it?

They tricked me into thinking positive change could happen :sadness:

I want to put more research in this, but I have a loose theory about modern American slavery. Statistically prison labor makes up a relatively small percent of production, but the meta-structural purpose of it isn't just to provide cheap labor for some companies. Prison labor exists to be lower the overall wage-floor, the ultimate threat to the workforce. McDonalds doesn't use prison labor for all their chicken production, but by using it causes non-forced chicken farms to lower their prices to compete. They do this by lowering wages or one of the other terrible practices in the chicken industry.

Yeah and the other factor is that it's a form of terrorism

I prefer "white nationalism" over terrorism. The T word is basically meaningless and IMO should be largely removed leftist discourse. White nationalism or fascism much more accurately describes the state of the extreme and violent right in America and Europe. It doesn't leave a grey area for "counter-terrorist efforts" to oppress brown people.

Good point, although all those terms are a bit ambiguous in this specific context, so maybe I would say they're a gun pointed at the head of all workers

Edit: the slavery is the gun specifically

Absolutely, one of the cruelest forms of coercion in an intentionally coercive society.

Literally just rebranded some parts of it. The other parts they threw a blanket over, but the outline of slavery is still there.

“Student debt? Rising cost of housing? These brilliant entrepreneurs have a solution that will save millennials! They got the idea off of an old German sign, and millennials should really take the message to heart. in order to live in the cozy, minimalist guest homes of these beautiful billionaires all you have to do is collect 21 tons of apples a day. The men also perform free labor for CAAIR’s founders, family and friends. A group of men said they helped remodel the Wilkersons’ master bedroom. Another said he helped one of their daughters pack boxes and move. Still others worked on an egg farm owned by the Wilkersons’ other daughter. The program told the courts that it was community service, according to employees.

This is more common than you'd think. The rehab I went to basically had franchises and some of them were work camps, and others....you know, actually gave a shit. I was lucky to go to one of the ones that gave a shit. The guy running the center I went through is now in charge of all the centers in the southeast and they're all on the up and up now.

If you or a loved one need help, please do some research before you agree to anything. That might not be possible if you're court ordered, but here and now it is.

And feel free to reach out to myself, or post on c/recovery!

Reveal is too often very lib, but their series on Cenikor was really, really grim and eye-opening. I just wish that this kind of in-depth reporting led to any kind of call to action, honestly. Instead it's just more of the same John Oliver-style liberal witnessing of atrocities, without any real pushback. I don't know what I want them to do, honestly. I just wish that this kind of thing led to something.
