My power is probably gonna be out for the next few days, and now my water is unsafe to drink :ag:

The US is wild, i've had maybe one power outage at home ever, people would riot if they didn't have clean water, it would be/is unthinkable.

People are giving each other advice in how to filter water from their tap. If i told anynone here, that this is what's going on in the US, they wouldn't believe me.

People know that the infrastrcture is shit in the US, but still.

I remember driving through the California central valley for the first time and couldn't believe that the tap water spout at gas stations/fast food had a note saying it wasn't potable water

Flint's water has been fixed for a year or two now btw, although that's beside the point

Legit good drinking water. Clean your tub and fill it up, hurricane style but with snow

this will make your house much colder and is a bad idea if you don't have heat — in that circumstance, better would be to get it into a container outside and then just bring it in as you need to use it

The water is out not the gas/power. They have heat just a boil notice as far as I know, also bringing in snow will NOT make your house "much colder". If you're interested in outdoor freshwater storage there are tons of YouTube videos

Welp. You're fucked. Best of luck chapo. Kerosene heaters are a good option in this scenario but I guess you're past that. Hopefully there's more than you there. Close off one room preferably in the middle of the house ( most insulated). If you have a tent place in that room for extra wind blocks. If you have a snuggle buddy or pets you should be fairly comfortable.

Any neighbors comrade? Where layers and use hot hands hand warmers for your hands and feet. If you have an outdoor grill , or simply a dry hole in the ground you can burn almost anything for heat. The survival stuff is fun but if you can talk to your neighbors is probably the best bet.

Thought OP said their power was out, and most of my texan friends have electric heat (not gas) so it seemed safe enough to issue the warning. Bringing a bunch of snow into your house will absolutely make it colder, both for the repeated trips outside to haul it in and for the water to reach ambient temperature in the tub.

I haven't been able to heat my house since 2am because of a lack of power. They said the outages would only be for 45 minutes at a time but I haven't had any power all day.

I mean yes if your heat is out. But if your heat is out it's going to be very cold very soon. It's up to you to prioritize freshwater over the next few days vs inviting lower temperatures in a few hours earlier...🙄

While boiling it for 15+ minutes will probably get rid of most of the germs, the water treatment plant might not filter the water and it could be murky or sandy. You can make a water filter though out of half a soda bottle, some aquarium rocks/gravel and activated charcoal at home though that will do a pretty good job. This is the basic idea, though I'd use a lot more activated charcoal if I were to build it. I've made a few of these before and they in fact do work.

"Hi, @Harukiller14. This is the Water Department. Boil your water before drinking it, okay? Don't ask why. Just boil it. Look, we like you. You pay your bills on time, etc. You're cool. So remember to boil. your. water. Very important. Bye."

Been there. Stay safe and warm.

Also, snow is made of water, and you can also boil that. Might be cleaner than whatever's coming out of the tap.

Try putting the snow in a glass. Letting it melt and see how the snow looks. I've seen before and after pics of perfect white snow turn into gray water

My metro had rolling (planned) power outages the past 24 hours, 30-60 minutes at a time. A bunch of peoples power didnt come back on from what I hear

It was -6F today, like actual temp.

Yup. They estimated the outages would be like 45min at a time, but that's obviously not true lol I'm just assuming I'm out of power until it begins to thaw which will be Wednesday

We used to have these back in 1990 in Eastern Europe, as the entire economy was collapsing just as the regime was about to go down as well. I haven't seen a power outage in years, and "electricity regimen" since them

Yah know this is making me wonder what the point of all that imperialism was. Weren't we all supposed to be labor aristocrats basking in the super profits plundered from the south? I mean yeah sure we get bananas at Costco all year round which is nice I guess but with all that plunder I was hoping for some fucking Norway level infrastructure.
