Hey, imagine how much this will increase property values. Just kick out all the poor people and raise rent. Remodel a little. Then all the coders will move in and be good tenants. Perfect opportunity to justify all that gentrifying. The poor people will just have to go somewhere else away from everyone where they can't be seen. Perfect foundation for the new tech cities.

Seriously. The left must organize for rent forgiveness and link up with the dispossessed people or we ain't shit. Consciousness through struggle is the only way. If we don't the conservatives will hedge limited relief along racial, geographic, economic splits and if that's nominally successful then they win.

There are lots of little left groups and organizations organizing rent strikes and blocking evictions. Problem is that I don't see them consolidating into something big, and any eviction struggle will likely fly under the radar.

Wow US is truly the land of democracy. If your human rights protest doesn't have strong organizers you're given a government issued one.

Edit: also, you don't need to look into why there don't seem to be any black organizers around. :huey-wut:

Whenever elections roll around, poor people are rarely ever shown or catered to. It’s usually shit that only the middle class cares about. I bet you the news won’t say much about this and most people will forget it ever happened.

They won't. Landlords don't actually like evictions because they take a long time and come with the risk of the tenant destroying the property on the way out. They use it as a threat and generally prefer to do "cash for keys", or just intimidate people into leaving voluntarily.

They will probably cover it through the eyes of suburban PMC's who are worried about the new nearby favelas are damaging their property values and bringing crime and drugs to their neighborhood.

Right now we don't have favelas simply because we don't afford the poor even that luxury. I wonder if that will change in the next few weeks. Holy Christ.

Just thinking about the Toronto encampment crackdowns. The one in Trinity bellwoods resulted in bulldozing of the tents and personal property of the campers, and the bulldozing of a publicly funded community garden "just in case" there was more property hiding there.

There were 26 arrests at the last one, mainly of heroes defending the encampments. Lots of injuries too.

Toronto sucks, but I would bet the US cities would go to a lot larger lengths to ensure that favelas and encampments are broken and destroyed.

Kkkanada doesn't allow them either, while many countries with larger underclasses know how disastrous to the ruling class it would be to simply bulldoze the slums. That violence would be reciprocated.

They won't cover it up immediately, but they might be able to make people forget about it by 2024, or at least convince people that it's just normal and not Biden's fault.

There'll be about 400 scandals on both sides before then to distract people too.

Yeah I agree, they would probably just give it the bare minimum amount of coverage possible. Unless it leads to mass protests of some kind, then it might force the news to actually give it more attention.

It'll depend on how many it happens to at once I think as well. If it's a slow trickle of people being pushed through months long eviction procedures there might be enough buffer time there to prevent any serious rioting from the affected.

It's just going to kick the can a bit though, the systems we have in place with credit and renters history prevent you from basically ever renting or owning again once evicted or foreclosed on so it's possible it'll be quite a big deal in the coming months or years.

That latter part is one of the pieces of the puzzle that the out of touch don't think about, as it's a consequence of systems in place instead of outright written as law, so it might literally be they aren't seeing that possibility.

The flip side of this is that landlords need tenants, or they don't get any "passive income". What's more likely is that we go back to some combo of tenement style homes and extra fees and deposits for people who have eviction records or are "subprime" renters.

Of course it could be worse. In the Soviet Union, families frequently lived in dorms and had to share kitchens and even a bathroom!

What's perspective is there to have?

America is heading towards either socialism or fascism. One party is pushing for Fascism, and the other is getting to prevent large change.

Fuck it, get some Trump bucks and have a good weekend before the nazis murder you. If you aren't up for fighting 2/3ds of the county as is.

Active worsening of conditions sucks a lot more than the passive "doing nothing." Yes, the Biden administration sucks and has achieved quite literally nothing in the last 6 months aside from guaranteeing losses in 2022 and 2024, but you cannot pretend that Trump didn't actively and intentionally make things worse, and that round 2 wouldn't go further.

Its a good point, I posted that last night angry about the rent cliff we're about to hit at the end of this month. So I was thinking of the perspective wherein "doing nothing" is literally the same as making things worse.

You are correct and thank you for realigning that perspective for me.

Yeah, the rent cliff is an absolute fucking nightmare, but we can't focus entirely on inward issues and economics. Doing nothing and allowing others to make things worse is making things worse, but it's important to think about the magnitude of that "worse" level. One worse is ignoring the problem and the other worse is actively calling for murder. It's easy to just go "yeah, sure, I'd throw people in a wood chipper in exchange for a marginal improvement of my own material conditions," but it's important to remember that actively fucking over comrades will just make things worse for you and everyone else in the long run.

I cede your point, but I wasn't exactly suggesting to throw my comrades in a wood chipper. I was saying there is no real difference between the two parties except that one was potentially giving me $2,000 which would improve my material conditions somewhat, being an incredibly poor person and all.

Coming at me a bit hot on the defense of the Dems here.

I'm not here to defend the Dems, I'm not even American. I'm just really sick of people in leftist spaces getting weirdly gung ho about throwing minorities under the bus in exchange for table scraps from fascists without thinking about it.

Agreed, it's easy to turn people with the promises of monetary gain when wealth inequality is this severe.

It'll be the game plan, and has been, of fascists forever. So I'm in the wrong here really for even suggesting it.

Going to get harder and harder to navigate this as time goes on as well, people will accept some pretty fucking bleak things, or as was my case here not fully consider them, for a small amount of financial alleviation under a society like this.
