infectiousness of old diseases is estimated though; there's no way to compare spanish flu besides the broad comparison they made here which is like, the viral equivalent of circumnavigation
no shit it took longer for a disease in 1919 or 1889 to spread across the world they didn't have planes going directly from hotbeds to new countries
Yeah it’s not a very helpful measurement, but it’s still interesting and scary
Awesome. Glad to be having my first child born in the next like 15 days. Surely this won't affect anything, including my unvaccinated wife. Everything is totally normal here.
Damn, that's terrifying. Sending my best to you and your family, hope everyone is well and stays healthy :stalin-heart:
Thank you, comrade. She has agreed to be vaccinated immediately after delivery so our baby can get those antibodies from breastfeeding. Its the getting to that point bit that's looking scary now.
But here in the south that's called "living in fear" as some sort of satanic communist psychopath
I don't know if this is helpful but there are two styles of masks that will do a better job protecting her, especially at the hospital:
-
KN95 masks. The Max Planck Institute found that they make one of the best seals, including vs. standard N95s. These are also fairly comfortable and come in ear-loop and strap-around-the-head styles. I prefer the latter for long-term wearing, they're very comfortable.
-
Silicone 3M respirators with P100 disc filters. Get the gray and orange kind that don't have a filterless exhalation port because otherwise you'll (reasonably) get told to wear something else in a hospital. This is slightly more comfortable in terms of skin contact and makes a better seal but is heavier.
Please let me know if I can be more descriptive, if this is helpful. It's a scary time to go to a hospital

Barely a month after its detection in southern Africa, the new variant of the coronavirus was already dominant in countries around the world,
Bro it didn't COME from South Africa. It's spreading very quickly yes, and I'm not even disputing the idea that it's the fastest spreading virus ever, but we aren't even sure when it started to spread. They just observed it in South Africa because they have the world's best epidemiology resources, due to AIDS.
I didn’t interpret it as them saying it came from South Africa, only that it was first detected there.
The western world is committing suicide right in front of our eyes.
Only China will remain. :xicko:
It's genuinely shocking to me just how much rot there was in litterally every western country, and somehow they just continued to lumber on, right until they collided with COVID. Like, I live in Denmark, one of the "good" countries, that other countries sometimes tries to emulate and that people generally want to migrate to, but fuck me COVID is wrecking us now. And people have just completely given up, while our SocDem government spends all their time responding to different businesses who claim they are being oppressed by Female Stalin the Traitor-Witch (our reactionaries aren't particularly creative with their nicknames).
so i've seen this claim and medical people are skeptical that it's more contagious than measles
I thought the big thing omicron has going for it is the low incubation period?
idk. I think they were focusing on the R0. Omicron is around 10 while measles is at least 15. But 10 ain't exactly something to ignore
Yeah, so plenty of viruses have higher R0. The problem is Measles has an incubation of over a weak, and omicron has only a few days, which acts as a multiplier on the R0.
