unfortunately, it is totally possible to make that trip if you have a submarine that wasn't designed by a startup-brained moron

    they'll probably be fine

Yeah, I'm not sure what point he's trying to prove. Of course the industry is safe, that's what all the safety requirements when building and operating a submarine is all about.

thats the point though there kinda aren't any requirements I thought? Its all voluntary iirc?

There are standards, that's why the OceanGate rich fools also had to sign a waiver acknowledging that the craft was not certified at all

The standards are if James Cameron writes you a letter that says "Damn dude you're gonna fucking die you dumb motherfucker. Eywa is gonna hear you when you're becoming crab food at the bottom of the ocean." You have to up your game.

James Cameron has the woke mind virus, do not listen to him billionaires like Elon Musk. Build sheet metal tubes and plunge yourselves to the darkest depths of the ocean it's safe.

I'm legitimately convinced we could solve the musk problem by saying that woke moralists are trying to impose their will through draconian reinforced double hull theories.

I guess a lot of standards are this way to some extent but like, a voluntary certification produced by some random company for profit is barely a standard at all, when it comes to certification of life-safety-critical equipment. That's what I meant by "kinda aren't any requirements, it's all voluntary".

It's kinda silly that the guy who tries to go out to sea in a plastic bubble or whatever gets stopped by the coast guard but rich idiots they're like "go ahead sir right away sir"

Like with most thing there's all those requirements are to get government funding. (That red tape you hear people who don't know what delta p means whining about)

Any numbnuts can put a bucket over their head and jump off a ship in the middle of the ocean.

Triton Submersibles is actually one of those companies that knows what they're doing. Their big project was the DSV Limiting Factor, which is a legitimate deep sea research vessel, so unless they're using another shed build submarine they'll probably survive

But it might mean that more startup brained billionaires get lulled into a false sense of security and build more OceanGate style tubs

I've been saying we should all act like this is the coolest thing ever because musk will absolutely try to copy it but lead the design himself leading to an actual ocean gate 2.0.

I did hear someone say that these subs tend to cost 2x what the one these nerds are going down in. So here's hoping that 2x savings owns them.

Yea the last one failed because they bought used parts that were literally advertised as being non viable for deep water trips.

If a billionaire decided to not try to save a couple grand by using second hand parts and a madcatz controller this should be trivial for them. It's why the last one was so funny. He had all the money in the world so he thought that made him smarter than nature.

It deconstructs Ayn Rand by playing it straight. Don't expect Disco Elysium analysis, but it does have good writing. Excellent twist for its time, and I won't spoil it just in case.

I was talking to a coworker about this and had to defend my glee by proving that this billionaire is a demon. Found an old reddit thread where someone in Dayton, OH was being sued by his real estate investment firm, Connor Group, for one million (1,000,000) dollars for publicly complaining about them not sending maintenance crews to fix problems with his apartment.

Found a few others with people warning others not to move into his apartment complexes for the same reason.

Sad to hear that Triton is a real submarine company and he won't die due to a Logitech controller shorting out or whatever.
