og-hex-bear Reddit killing 3rd party apps, twitter limiting posts you can see. Hexbear stays winning, exept when it wouldn't load for me this morning.

I'm sure your potential advertisers love it when you intentionally limit views of their ads on your platform.

They can probably spin this as a net positive to engagement honestly. Since this makes it much harder for bots to operate, it means ad views are more likely to be humans. Since humans can also now only view so much content a day, they could say that it's more likely for them to engage in advertising content because they have nothing else to engage with.

We all know that's all total bullshit but it sounds good so marketing execs will eat it up

Don't think so, twitter was always the ugly duckling when it came to buying ad space. Marketing teams have usually flocked to insta and facebook which has better click-through rate and impression numbers than twitter. If they were fluffing their numbers with bots which, let's be honest, they definitely were, then it's just adding a giant pile of shit to the (marketing-wise) stink pile that twitter has always been, even before musk arrived

Elon Musk innovating once again, like good lord you fucking idiot do you wanna go whale-hunting on a social media site?

Social media needs people, it needs as many users as possible, that is literally the only relevant criteria. That is why literally every relevant social media platform is entirely free to use, because that's how you attract the widest user-base, and people will always flock to the one with the widest user-base. Your power users being able to read as much as they like won't matter, if the biggest influencers see that their engagement rates are shrinking 90% because the unwashed masses have exhausted their daily reading limits, they will stop using your site.

Edit: I'm at my PC all day and I always have a twitter tab open, but now it's closed because I'll wanna look at it again later. The free dopamine hit of opening social media is no longer free, so next time I'm on the toilet, on the bus, the train, in bed I'll think twice about opening it. This is genuinely the dumbest, most idiotic, most incredibly ass-backwards business decision I have ever seen in my life. How someone can be so utterly oblivious to how their business works?

He's such a fucking simpleton its baffling, he saw like one thing on twitter that could potentially involve people giving money directly to the company, and every action after the bought the fucking site is just trying to force people to pay that one direct fee.

The only consolation is all the right-wing blue checks realizing their big hero really is that much of a simpleton. There's tons of free speech warriors and chuds in the replies to his tweet mocking him and complaining.

It gives me a lot of sadistic glee that these chuds he tried so desperately to appeal to hate him just as much as everyone else on this godforsaken planet. Go fuck yourself Elon, your ex wife hates you, your kids hate you, the real world hates you and now the online world hates you too, no matter how hard you try, your egomania and your narcissism will ensure that nobody will ever love you. You know that everyone who pretends to like you is just a sycophant, even more pathetic than you, and I hope you will never get another good night of sleep because you worry that someone might bribe your security to look the other way.

Why would you want to join a Twitter 2.0 closed platform? The activitypub world (Mastodon, Pleroma, etc) has flaws but it's all based on open standards.

Because I like twitter. I want twitter 2.0. If it's the exact same as twitter before Musk bought it, sign me the fuck up, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

I like its formatting, its openness and how it gives me a mixed timeline with my friends and a big variety of celebs and content creators I follow. I want the normie stuff.

it just baffles me that musk (and spez while we're at it) think their audience is captive, when they're really only retained by the slightest of dopamine hits and if the experience is frustating enough to outmatch the few drops of dopamine a sensible chuckle every once in a while may provide, then they just won't frequent your dumb wesbite. they seriously don't even understand why their own websites have stuff like infinite scrolling, why they lack landing pages and take you straight to the content, etc

        ·

Exactly. Convenince and availablity are absolutely vital, apps like twitter thrive off of almost automized behavior of taking your phone out of your pocket and opening the app out of sheer routine. Adding a cap on this completely ruins this behavior, people will just find an alternative without that limit.

  • elgonzalors [he/him]

My theory is that Musk did not pay Google for their servers and he knew Twitter was going down today so he's making bullshit excuses to gain time to renegotiate the contracts with Google. It lines up with the expiration date of the contracts.

I mean I sympathize with spending a lot of hours on shitty proprietary platforms, as well almost all do I suspect. I used to spend a lot of time on reddit (though I never met a single person from it).

But how have you made it this far without like, branching out or moving to mastodon or something? twitter has been in a death spiral since elon bought it, this is just the latest plunge...

twitter has been in a death spiral since elon bought it

It really hasn't. It's gotten worse, people have made mastodon accounts, but very few people have actually left twitter. I don't use mastodon because none of my friends use it, simple as that.

I meant a death spiral in terms of elon running it into the ground, not in terms of your friend group still using it, but yeah, I get that I guess

I have a different sphere among which not that many people heavily used it to begin with and many of them left twitter last year, or at least made sure they set up mastodon as a backup and found as many of their core friends on there as they could in case twitter became unusable for them or cracked down or whatever under 🍉's capricious rule.

You might want to consider doing the same tbh. It doesn't have to be mastodon, that is just brought up a lot because it is a twitter clone so it might be appealing in terms of similar features, enabling similar browsing habits, etc. but one way or another you should try to establish that network of people on alternative platforms, whether its mastodon or hexbear or email or discord or matrix or IRL, whatever, just so you don't lose touch with all your friends the next time elon causes a meltdown at twitter.
