the movie was boring but i don’t remember anything particularly anti-communist. the politics were fine iirc
the movie doesn’t uphold that line though. it’s all shown from oppenheimer’s perspective, but after the bomb’s dropped he mentions how he found out the japanese were on the brink of surrender regardless and that they weren’t necessary, and also how it was really to intimidate the soviet union. the movie definitely depicts everyone and everything that happened as evil
i didn’t enjoy it, it’s just that isn’t true regarding the movie. nolan’s a horrible director but i feel like this movie doesn’t have the horrible politics his films usually have, definitely not the level of his batman movies.
LMAO yeah i was pleasantly surprised in that regard i was expecting the worst. none of the cpusa members are portrayed negatively, marx and capital vol 1-3 get name dropped a few times, stresses that countless innocents died from the bombs (and firebombing in tokyo), makes the american imperialists look like monsters (one guy didn’t want to bomb kyoto because he vacationed there with his wife), makes truman look like a monster, makes oppenheimer look like a huge dick even if it does show his guilt and later opinions on nuclear weapons, etc. also vaguely mentions how they’re testing on native american land. the only thing i can think of to critique it politically speaking is that it doesn’t really analyze mccarthyism at all and just shows the anti-communism oppenheimer faced as just some guy having a personal problem with him.
it also definitely has his best film making from a technical aspect but god dude it really is boring LMFAO i said in a discussion post the other day that i considered leaving at some points and had to keep fighting off sleep, but i was also in a bad mood that night so idk, i’m planning on rewatching it when it comes to streaming because i have been thinking about it a lot. but then i remember half the movie was just:

This wasn't directed at anyone in particular or I would've tagged them (or made it like an 'Username Challenge' lol) - there are 80+ comments and when I made the comment, the ones I'd seen were all mad to some degree about Barbie or Oppenheimer.

wrong. matinees exist for a reason and, for example the AMC theater by my house does 30% off IMAX and Digital showings from 9am-4pm Monday - Wednesday.
going alone is worth it. there is nothing better than sitting by yourself with a film YOU are interested in seeing and becoming immersed for the next 90-180 minutes in a dark theater. I dunno about you but I certainly don't have a 20x20m screen and surround system set up anywhere in my apartment - David Lynch was right that you can do yourself a disservice by watching some films on a monitor, tablet, or even a 60" TV.
I do agree that most movies aren't really worth paying to see when you can just pirate them in 2-3 months - slop like Cocaine Bear or the 3rd reboot of Haunted Mansion don't need a large screen or surround sound to be enjoyed - but I wouldn't have wanted to see Dune, Avatar 2, or Asteroid City (just to name a few recent examples) for the first time on my monitor even if it is 4k. I said it in another post the other day - some films are meant to be spectacles and part of the spectacle is seeing it on a huge ass screen and feeling the sound.
This is only enhanced by going alone - especially when you're sitting in a theater 20 seats across from the only other person attending the showing (literally my Asteroid City experience a few weeks ago at 4pm on a Friday. 10/10 we both enjoyed the movie).
FWIW, I do agree that the theater experience can be expensive if you're going to non-matinee showings - even I weep at an $18 IMAX ticket price. But I've always reasoned that I wind up spending more than that whenever I grab drinks at a bar for an hour or when I go out to eat with someone.
Let me enjoy the slop before Mattel creates their own cinematic universe that I end up hating as well.
Hasbro has already started one with Transformers and GI Joe canonically in the same universe again.
That said, I eagerly await Barbie joining He Man to stop the insidious time travelling schemes of American Girl. Two words, Jacobin Barbie.
