I've been sick of the marketing push about this for months by now. Just let it be over
I hope they keep expanding the Barbie Cinematic Universe (BCU) and it completely takes over and it's just Barbie movies and shows and fandom everywhere for a decade
it would have been more based if the slaves liberated themselves and then took :kelly: Klan-heiress Targ-Aryan's child soldier lizard pets and used them to free even more slaves.
It was enlightened centrist shit all along; it had to be.
The grimdark crapsack world couldn't improve somewhat. That would harm the brand! Also, revolutionary change is scary so it's time for another well meaning revolutionary SV victim to go too far.
Barbie meets her grandmother, Lilli the Nazi Sex Doll
Due to the major backlash Barbie 1 got from news outlets like the Daily Wire for not being racist enough and seeing the success of the sound of freedom, Barbie 2 is about the titular character joining the IDF and fighting Hamas style human trafficking.
I'll wait for the Barbie christmas special. It's the Santa and Barbie crossover we all deserve.
Klaus Barbie
My lib sibling literally called Oppenheimer an anti-communist propaganda piece, so I guess you should be thankful Barbie gets pushed more.
Nolan stans here already tried to defend the latest BWAAAAAAAAAAAAM but I feel vindicated that it's been identified as yet more reactionary shit from a reactionary shithead.
A 2 hour toy commercial about an Aryan children's toy with blonde hair and blue eyes that was created to give little girls body dysmorphia so they would grow up to be obedient housewives
versus
a movie about a famous scientist with friends in the CPUSA who gave money to leftist causes and helped defeat fascism and was suspected of communist sympathies himself.
But Chris Nolan made the second one so it's reactionary. Forget about death of the author
an Aryan children's toy with blonde hair and blue eyes that was created to give little girls body dysmorphia so they would grow up to be obedient housewives
There’s a scene where a middle schooler virtually quotes this to Barbies face and calls her a fascist which makes her cry
You're blissfully ignoring the Nolan spin on the story. It isn't some magically nonpolitical presentation; it is yet another Nolan spin, this time on Oppenheimer, complete with anticommunist bullshit mixed in which downright warps the biographical story. Clearly you're stanning for Nolan movies and made an entire alt account just to reactively rage at me to defend the good name of your favorite cryptofascist movie treat man, so I don't know what else to tell you except better get your next alt account made soon, you silly superfan.
Forget about death of the author
Yes, I rather would because it's used by types like yourself as a thought terminating cliche to excuse your own failures of literary comprehension.
EDIT: I may have been mistaken about how this particular Nolan film plays out compared to all the ones I saw before and disliked for similar reasons, and I am willing to believe the testimony of one person replying who explained how the film plays out. That's nice, and I'm glad. On the other hand, the standard issue toxic fan that showed up in the below comment chain (and made another alt account specifically to go at me as of only ~30 minutes ago) reinforces why I like to steer clear of Nolan movies and especially their fandoms in general.
the movie was boring but i don’t remember anything particularly anti-communist. the politics were fine iirc
the politics were fine iirc
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/07/oppenheimer-christopher-nolan-movie-narrative-hiroshima-nagasaki-nuclear/
the movie doesn’t uphold that line though. it’s all shown from oppenheimer’s perspective, but after the bomb’s dropped he mentions how he found out the japanese were on the brink of surrender regardless and that they weren’t necessary, and also how it was really to intimidate the soviet union. the movie definitely depicts everyone and everything that happened as evil
You said it was boring, but you're going to bat for it.
It's fine if you liked it; just own that if you did.
I have personally been burned way too many times from Nolan ideology before, especially during Batman movies but not exclusive to them.
i didn’t enjoy it, it’s just that isn’t true regarding the movie. nolan’s a horrible director but i feel like this movie doesn’t have the horrible politics his films usually have, definitely not the level of his batman movies.
I probably won't see it, but if what you say is true, that's nice that Lucy actually held down the football for Charlie Brown to actually kick it for once instead of another "deep and thoughtful kino masterpiece with totally nonpolitical universal deep thoughts" wound up being "WHAT IF UNGRATEFUL POORS WANT TO NUKE CITY AND ONLY COPS AND COSTUME BILLIONAIRE CAN STOP THAT?"
LMAO yeah i was pleasantly surprised in that regard i was expecting the worst. none of the cpusa members are portrayed negatively, marx and capital vol 1-3 get name dropped a few times, stresses that countless innocents died from the bombs (and firebombing in tokyo), makes the american imperialists look like monsters (one guy didn’t want to bomb kyoto because he vacationed there with his wife), makes truman look like a monster, makes oppenheimer look like a huge dick even if it does show his guilt and later opinions on nuclear weapons, etc. also vaguely mentions how they’re testing on native american land. the only thing i can think of to critique it politically speaking is that it doesn’t really analyze mccarthyism at all and just shows the anti-communism oppenheimer faced as just some guy having a personal problem with him.
it also definitely has his best film making from a technical aspect but god dude it really is boring LMFAO i said in a discussion post the other day that i considered leaving at some points and had to keep fighting off sleep, but i was also in a bad mood that night so idk, i’m planning on rewatching it when it comes to streaming because i have been thinking about it a lot. but then i remember half the movie was just:
government bureaucrats: are you a communist oppenheimer: no government: are you disloyal to the american government oppenheimer: no government: are you a spy oppenheimer: no
on what basically felt like a loop lmao
I believe you and I'm genuinely impressed that Nolan showed some range considering the movies of his I had previously seen.
Ironically, I might have enjoyed the movie more than you did; I believe you saying it was boring for you but deserved a fairer appraisal now.
Both movies involved large groups of people making them. There really isn't a difference there except that alt account thinks one is art and the other is not.
assume 100% fascist
According to you, apparently, having watched 6 previous Nolan movies and being put off by each and every one of them is not nearly enough fairly justification for me to not want to see yet another one because of the likely event of yet more Nolan political sermonizing masquerading as noisy kino.
Someone already argued with me and convinced me that perhaps this one was a bit different than the other Nolan slop. Your toxic fandom nonsense in your reply, on the other hand, is pretty standard issue and tiresome.
you're obsessed
Lay on the ableist concern trolling. I know it's not your first time, oh very brave alt account.
It is when words like "obsessed" are thrown out, or the cousins "unhinged" or the like, all because I said I had reservations about Nolan movies after disliking a number of previous ones. I may have even heard, maybe incorrectly, that there was an anticommunist spin on this one.
But when some hypocrite goes out of their way to make a brand new account just to concern troll me about what they called an "obsession" because of the above, yes I will call it as I see it.
I don't even know what you're doing here but I'm not interested because it's even further off topic.
You don't like me. You don't have to. It's still tiresome and you're contributing nothing by posting here that I don't already know.
terminally online
Harboring a slow burn grudge at me and seething about it for months, waiting for a mysteriously timely chance to come to the rescue of an alt account with zero post history except in this thread, isn't a good look and isn't going to change my mind about anything.
idgaf
Liar.
You made a fucking alt account to continue foaming with toxic fandom rage at me.
Did you seriously just make a brave alt account, just now, just to at me again in defense of a fucking Nolan movie?
I mean, it's not the first time, far from it, but you Nolan stans really are tiresome.
EDIT:
director (and hundreds of other people)
Because hundreds of other people weren't involved in the Barbie movie. It was printed as a perfect pink plastic cube straight from the Hasbro factory, unlike the world-quivering BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAM that sounded the concerted genius of hundreds of divinely inspired nonpolitical artisans that brought the Oppenheimer movie to you, asking only that you make brave alt accounts to at me in return for the blessed treat.
If I see one more politician talk about Barbenhimer or about how Barbie is woke propaganda while the country is burning I'm going to lose it
Barbie is woke propaganda
I'm making Barbie...but for whites only!
Extremely obvious attempt at viral marketing that people have nevertheless fallen for and will continue to fall for when the even more obvious attempt at viral marketing happens again.
I think people have just accepted that they have to participate in viral marketing stuff now because it's the only way to relate to half their friends, families, and coworkers. Like, did anyone believe for a second all these zoomers were that into Grimmace?
Idk. At a certain point, complaining about this stuff feels on par with the scalds who were angry over jokes about the Titanic Sub.
Yeah, a lot of the shit in the news is a marketing gimmick. But what else is new? Getting worked up because people made Grimace memes for a few weeks after some McDs ad guy spent too much money to force the subject to trend gets us what, exactly?
People like movies. Both these movies appear to be well received. So people are piling on a thing that looks fun.
Nothing wrong with that.
Ah forgive me comrade I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to express my frustration about being saturated with astroturf marketing, and that I especially couldn't do it on a communist website
I will promptly return to the pod and eat the bugs
Complaining about a thing
Complaining about the complaining about a thing
Complaining about the complaining about the complaining about a thing
Complaining about complaining about complaining about complaining about complaining about complaining about complaining about complaining like a JoJo Stand battle
Marketing works. All modern cultural events are the result of marketing
Libs: the 2 hour toy commercial is based because it recuperates and co-opts feminism
Conservatives: the 2 hour toy commercial is cringe because it hates men
Everyone else: I'mma smoke some weed and go laugh at the 2 hour toy commercial with my friends
It looks vaguely like a movie long Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode and it has Will Ferrel doing funny villain things. I'll still eat that garbage!
fraid i'm going to force you to read my opinions on it once i get round to seeing it
mattel is working on fourty fucking five movies about their toys. the slop is never going to end.
Hexbear Challenge: stop being mad about popular culture and just go see a movie for fun
Enjoying popular culture is actually about making sure the creators and fans all have the same politics as me. If a CHUD likes a movie that means the movie is sus
based on director's previous movies about a fascist superhero and the fact he dared make the fictional protesters equivalent to the on-going popular protest movement at the time, for the next month and a half I will be malding about a 3 hour movie I am not planning on seeing but have also already somehow formed opinions on the entire plot and cast of characters
based on director's previous movies about a fascist superhero and the fact he dared
I thought Greta Gerwig directed Barbie? Who are you referring to?
E) NM I think this is about Nolanheimer
get real, being a contrarian is at least 50% of my personality. if i enjoy things i will basically dissolve into nothing!
I enjoyed the Barbie movie for the slop it was
That said, I totally understand and do not blame anyone for being tired of the hype wave and being annoyed at hype in general.
This is an offshoot of a reddit community after all...
This wasn't directed at anyone in particular or I would've tagged them (or made it like an 'Username Challenge' lol) - there are 80+ comments and when I made the comment, the ones I'd seen were all mad to some degree about Barbie or Oppenheimer.
and just go see a movie for fun
no (it's expensive and to go alone is kinda pointless)
wrong. matinees exist for a reason and, for example the AMC theater by my house does 30% off IMAX and Digital showings from 9am-4pm Monday - Wednesday.
going alone is worth it. there is nothing better than sitting by yourself with a film YOU are interested in seeing and becoming immersed for the next 90-180 minutes in a dark theater. I dunno about you but I certainly don't have a 20x20m screen and surround system set up anywhere in my apartment - David Lynch was right that you can do yourself a disservice by watching some films on a monitor, tablet, or even a 60" TV.
I do agree that most movies aren't really worth paying to see when you can just pirate them in 2-3 months - slop like Cocaine Bear or the 3rd reboot of Haunted Mansion don't need a large screen or surround sound to be enjoyed - but I wouldn't have wanted to see Dune, Avatar 2, or Asteroid City (just to name a few recent examples) for the first time on my monitor even if it is 4k. I said it in another post the other day - some films are meant to be spectacles and part of the spectacle is seeing it on a huge ass screen and feeling the sound.
This is only enhanced by going alone - especially when you're sitting in a theater 20 seats across from the only other person attending the showing (literally my Asteroid City experience a few weeks ago at 4pm on a Friday. 10/10 we both enjoyed the movie).
FWIW, I do agree that the theater experience can be expensive if you're going to non-matinee showings - even I weep at an $18 IMAX ticket price. But I've always reasoned that I wind up spending more than that whenever I grab drinks at a bar for an hour or when I go out to eat with someone.
Let me enjoy the slop before Mattel creates their own cinematic universe that I end up hating as well.
Hasbro has already started one with Transformers and GI Joe canonically in the same universe again.
That said, I eagerly await Barbie joining He Man to stop the insidious time travelling schemes of American Girl. Two words, Jacobin Barbie.
I'm kind of hype for it myself, but that said, marketing pushes are tiresome and I won't condemn you for being tired of it.
