I am once again reminded that a fascist worked out today and I - in fact - did not. With gyms being closed due to Covid and temperatures dropping to discourage jogging, what is a good way to get fit?

Bodyweight exercises and Calisthenics (pull ups, push ups, squats, etc), if done in the proper form and commitment can be a good way to exercise at home with minimal equipment. I think there's a subreddit called r/bodyweightfitness that can give much more detailed advice for that

How cold is it if you're risking disease just by going out? Do you live in Minnesota?

I'm not actually risking disease just by going out, but I'd probably have to get some long sports clothes and shit. I live in Germany, it's around 10°C / 50°F here.

that's perfect exercise weather for me, here in Colorado I'll jog with shorts and a short-sleeve while it's snowing, it's like a built in fan

Long sports clothes will be nice once it's cold, but for now shorts and a tee shirt will be perfect!

Just throw on a light sweater the first time, you'll be surprised at how quickly you want to take it off.

Weather where I'm at has been consistently cooler lately as well, and I've been managing 3+ mile walks pretty easily with just sweats and a light sweatshirt. If I was jogging I'd for sure be too warm.

Any recommendations for someone who gets shin splints when they run? I seriously need to run for about ten minutes before you can poke me in the shin to make me fall over.

Slow and steady is way better than going hard (for a whole bunch of other reasons too), and don't increase distance by more than 10% per week as a rule of thumb

Try and run on softer surfaces if possible (grass/dirt are ideal, even bitumen isn't toooo bad, concrete is brutal)

You might want to try getting better/newer shoes if you can afford them, it does make a real difference having shoes that aren't worn out

Running on a different surface sounds interesting, I'll definitely have to see the difference there. Fortunately I've got new shoes, just been too depressed to even break them in. Thanks for the advice!

tbh, I'd start with long walks on very flat ground until you can jog intermittently on the walks without getting shin splints

also, what's your stretching routine like? also, I was negligently fucking up my knees running with bad form for a few years. is it possible you're doing something like this with your shins?

Tbh, I don't really stretch. Most of the knowledge I have in regards to working out came from high school, so at this point in terms of working out properly I'm pretty for off the mark. I'd appreciate any advice you'd have to give!

Try these (but do not overdo them! if you overstretch you can really hurt yourself, so if it starts to hurt, stop stretching) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2G5WCJBpps

Anywhere you can swim? I know pools are closed, but I know lots of swimmers who are doing their swimming in the sea now.

God I fucking wish. I'm in a part of America where the bodies of water are either illegal to enter, or the water is so dirty you wouldn't want to get in anyways.

I second Yoga, so you don't end up hurting yourself doing something more difficult. Body-weight exercises are good if you don't have equipment. Weight-lifting will ABSOLUTELY give you amazing results even if you are not progressing super quick.

do that along with squats and situps a few times a day every day, and run (or jog/ walk at first)

I know fat guys who can squat. Think about it, those legs of yours have to carry your ass around all day. They can lift you up and down a couple times.

I started the bodyweight fitness recommended routine/program a few days ago. Feels good so far. Only requirement is a pull-up bar at the start. Cos I'm already quite fit/strong i'm having to branch out and buy some gymnastics rings.

I've always loved training martial arts to get fit.

I've found some neat stuff in /r/redcombatsports.

Found this guys channel there: https://m.youtube.com/channel/UC7xtrNIOd30YD7COBftAAqQ

Making a makiwara board is doable with some diy skills, or a homemade punching bag. There are lots of YouTube videos for that.

Also a set of resistance bands are great for in home workouts.

If you can stand to lose weight (and most people can), an easy thing to do is track your calorie intake. You don't have to get too intense with it; just google whatever you're eating and the portion size, and add up each day's calories on a spreadsheet. See what you're averaging after a week and then try to step it down. I've found that this also wakes you up to those days where you eat ridiculous amounts of calories (e.g., a big lunch, a big dinner, some snacks throughout the day, and several drinks at night). Just being aware of this stuff can help you cut back wherever it will be easiest for you to do so.

Cardio and weightlifting are great, but unless you're a professional athlete you're not going to come close to outworking a shitty diet. Losing weight will make all your other fitness goals easier and will save your lower body.

There is a shitton of youtube videos of 30 min routines without any equipment that are very good, at least to burn calories.
