Counterpoint: lack of cell service in subway tunnels is actually good because it creates one of the few increasingly rare spaces in modern society in which you cannot possibly be expected to always be available, whether socially or to your boss.

For real, my friends talk about how they hate always being available like this and I just say "uhhh, don't be available like that then. See? someone's calling me and I'm just not gonna pick up. easy as that."

You're partly right, but that's not a realistic answer for everyone, and it's treading close to taking a bad employer practice and blaming it on individual employees rather than the employer.

Some people are dicks though. The nice thing about “going into the subway” is that it gives you a firm boundary that they can’t possibly object to.

I mean they're not even talking about compulsive cell phone use though? Just the habit of picking up work calls when one's not explicitly on call.

Populists don't use their family names. I was thinking more along the lines of Bernie, Rashida, Ilhan.

Not just killer weapons, we also absolutely refuse to raise taxes on the rich by even a little bit to pay for improvements. Elizabeth Warren was talking about a meager wealth tax (much less Bernie's plans) and the DNC and ruling class saw her as a threat.

The problem with the NYC subway isn't investment so much as the fact that the MTA union makes it really difficult for unconnected people from getting jobs there and the slower moving older people do shit that gets them paid 300k a year when they aren't actually fixing shit.

ok but its not really fair to compare chambers st subway to the other ones, since chambers st hasn't even been operational since like the 30s. Most US subway stations are trash but thats still an unfair comparison

I don't know who told you that, but Chambers Street is a very active subway station that is still used every day. Hell, I used it just last week. There's a part of it that's closed down, but you can still see it from the J/Z platform during the week. The entire station looks like that, and it's in the Financial District of the richest city in the United States. Definitely not an unfair comparison.

Huh maybe it is just some platforms that are abandoned? I read an article that said it was abandoned in 1931. I guess it meant only that one side of the platform was abandoned.

Yeah, one of the platforms has been abandoned, but the entire station is a mess. And while this is definitely bad, even by NYC standards, it's not entirely out of the ordinary. The amount of "nice" subway stations I've been to in NYC I can count on one hand, while the majority are just slightly nicer versions of Chambers St.

Compared to NYC subway stations I’d eat off the floor of the worst European subway I’ve been in before i ate off the floor of the cleanest one in NYC

I love going to countries that have like 30 times less GDP per capita than NYC that have metro systems 30 times better than the MTA. :amerikkka:

Honestly not sure this is the play here in New York. I think NYC is unique amongst American cities in that without the subways, the entire city would fall apart. Nobody here owns a car, and everybody uses the subway to get to work/move around/do anything. Neglecting the city's infrastructure until it's privatized will just result in the city itself dying before anything could be privatized. Judging by how things are going right now, honestly might happen.

That's not at all what's happening with the NYC subway. The subway is in a bad state for 3 main reasons.

          1. There were periods where it was doing well and they took extra cash flow from the subway to expand other MTA projects outside the city

          2. It runs 24 hours so regular maintenance is incredibly difficult and has been for a very long time.

          3. The MTA union has more complicated work rules than any other transit union in the world and uses 2x as many people to do the same repairs, maintenance work, train monitoring, ect, when compared to how things work in either China, Europe, other US cities and so on.

I'm way more familiar with DC subways, which are actually decent, and they still don't hold a candle to those Chengdu photos.
