i don't understand innovation anymore
No phone, you just give apple, samsung, or Google $1000 dollars and they stamp your forehead.
new inkless stamp!
just a blank circle sticker. its not biodegradeable, it just stops being sticky.
they start selling sticker-sticker packs to restick your fav sticker to your forehead, adopting the ink cartridge business model.
I bought a Huawei phone and it's been great, has a headphone jack, affordable. Got one for my mom too been almost a year now.
I got a really good quality BT headphones, and in a vacuum they're equivalent to wire, but not only is having to charge my headphones seriously lame but there's a few places on the walk from my house to the store where the connection between them and my phone gets really bad and they basically become unusable for about ten minutes. Also, the connection lags out every time I turn my phone on or off or adjust the volume. Also the first second or so of every song gets cut off on BT. Fuck Bluetooth, it's a fucking garbage standard that's beaten by wire in every single possible way.
I use my headphone jack for several hours a day pretty much every day. I will never buy a phone without a headphone jack
I have a feeling that eventually I won't have the option to buy a phone with a headphone jack.
fuck I sstill wish slideout keyboards were a thing. Maybe I'm just of an older generation, but I could touchtype on those while walking and not have to look down at the phone, If I try to do that with a modern phone watjirever ikmk trhpoing usujallkty ernds uhoip lioke thios
I started using Motorola phones for this reason. They are one of the few that have said they plan to keep using them. I like their "one" series. They have massive batteries in some of them too. I only charge my phone once every 2 days and that's just to keep it above 40%. Could probably go 3 days and be ok.
I dunno, I got some lightning-port noise-cancelling earbuds from Meh for $40 and they're pretty neat. No batteries.
But fuck this no-port nonsense.
Innovation is when you needlessly create things so the outdated products get thrown into the trash and then end up in everything you eat, including that rain drop or snowflake that accidentally fell in your mouth while out walking.
USB-C is the new standard though. Phasing out the 3.5mm one is inevitable because USB-C is far more useful and also supports the same analog audio that 3.5mm does.
Those fold-over covers some cases have should be standard. Big sides, screen covered, everything in that grippy texture that makes your phone look like an overpriced "tactical" gunmod.
Just make phones invulnerable already.
I just want to be able to put a damn case on it in general at this point. Fuck all this "wrap around the edge" bullshit that's being done. I'm a clumsy dumbass. I drop my phone. Sometimes it lands on the corner, sometimes it hits the edge of a table with the edge of the phone. Sometimes it lands face flat. I need protection from as many angles as possible.
Yet another good point. Hell my hands sometimes curb around the edge and hit the front of the screen and cause problems lol. Like why would I make this issue 100 times worse?
also: unless I put my phone into some kind of weird mirror box I LITERALLY CANNOT SEE BOTH SIDES OF THE PHONE AT ONCE
jesus fuck, if you ABSOLUTELY NEED to do this, just copy nintendo and toss in an HDMI port
i just dont understand how anyone can be dumb enough to buy this shit? like... aw man i sure wish my phone became unusable for everyday use so i can look at the glowy sides of my phone??
Let's seeeeeee
- No wired headphones, even with a dongle
- No charging with someone else's charger unless they happen to have one of those stupid conduction pads
- No high speed data transfer
- No data transfer period to devices that don't have Bluetooth
- Rounded glass sides are extremely slippery and fragile, which sucks because the phone
- Is not compatible with a case, and
- No screen protector can wrap around corners unless it's some cheap plastic
No idea how you can go into recovery or debug without a wire connecting it to a computer
High speed data transfer and non Bluetooth data transfer should be possible via WiFi direct, but yeah this is a terrible concept. Just why would any company do this?
doesnt this increase the chance of breaking the whole crystal when it falls?
Oh no. I immediately turned off the edge screens of my s10 because my fat sausage hands aren't coordinated enough to hold the phone without activating the screen. I have no idea how to even hold a phone thats screen on 5 of 6 sides. Just gently lay it in your palm??
Yeah my dumb hands always touch the sides of the screen and fuck things up. Drives me mad.
Physically flip the phone over to read the next page! Its so innovative! A tactile way to continue reading, where has this been for all of human history?
You joke but Xiaomi has actually already shown concept phones that do just that.
https://www.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha-hands-on/
I kinda like it in a way but I imagine it would be a nightmare in practice.
You think that's bad but wait until you hear about how you can MAKE MONEY by choosing to display advertisements on the back! Pay off your phone's cost in just one year!
it will, of course, still be a touch screen. you'll need special stations to levitate your phone in should you wish to use it.
sometimes, not always, but sometimes I just want my old nokia candy bar phone I got back in 1999. that thing was tough as fuck and lasted years.
I recently picked up a Zune 30 and replaced the HDD with a 128GB SSD. I’m looking at a retro Nokia or maybe a budget BlackBerry. Between the both of those I hope to escape having a “smartphone”, even if just for a little bit
I want a huge brick phone with a colossal battery and every kind of port in existence
edit: that's made by a worker coop
The same trend is even more ridiculous with PCs.
Most desktops are never moved, yet somehow sub-ATX motherboards, with fewer ports, ram slots, PCI slots, SATA/NVMe slots, etc are more popular than ever. At the same time, even full size ATX cases seem to somehow support fewer HDDs than they did 20 years ago, despite getting rid of the standard 2 CD drives and 2 floppy drives.
Tools are judged on how effectively they do their jobs.
Just give me a halfway decent flip-touch screen. I know the flexy one exists, it sucks. Its fragile as fuck, which is dumb because the whole point would be to allow the casing to enclose the entire screen. Just put two screens on a hinge, it doesn't have to be a completely seemless gap. Just give me a refined DS or something or do it right.
I have the Zenphone 6 and it's actually pretty solid. No front camera (they put the rear one on a servo motor so it can rotate around). It also has a headphone jack, a notification LED, and a special button that you can use for whatever (I set mine to turn the flashlight on and off). Only downside is no replaceable battery, but the stock one is like 6000mah so it lasts crazy long. Also has a micro sd slot that supports up to 512 gigs and comes with 256 gigs of storage.
That seems like a nice phone, but I'm more looking for pure durability & battery life over anything. Maybe waterproofing or a headphone jack as a nice second.
The LG v20 was my last phone and it was alright. Shorter battery life, but you could pop the back off and swap them out for long hauls. Also had a headphone jack and was pretty solid. Broke it once, but that was me being drunk and slamming in face down into the concrete lol
Why can't we have phones that accept microUSB or some other standard instead of every iteration requiring a new dongle just to turn on?
That's literally how it is? Every phone used micro usb B for like a decade and now every phone uses usb C. Apple is the only company not following the standard and even they only changed the port once.
Still gets me that they were part of the consortium that developed usb c, and implemented it in all of their notebooks to an extent more than anyone else. But their phone? Nope. Still proprietary.
I know the future isn't so bright, but at least I can charge my phone on my laptop charger now!
:capitalist-laugh:
Oh well, at least people can veeeeeerry slowly charge their macbooks off their phone chargers now?
The USB-C standard actually supports super high amperage charging, so we're almost back to barrel plug levels of energy!
Can't get it backwards either. Fucking insane that no one thought about that sooner.
There was the short fat of unshielded USB connectors with contacts on both sides, but I guess that turned out to be a bad idea because of liquid or something.
I think USB-C cables are more expensive because you know... more wires. But they can do more at least.
My phone has two of those sides, and it's a pain in the ass because when I try to click on the edge of the screen it takes a couple trys. As opposed to if it was just a flat screen and worked like normal.
Ugh, same. All I do with my two waterfall sides is touch them by accident. Just imagining trying to hold this thing is infuriating.
i still use a 6s. it's battery was dying so i got that replaced and now its good as new. when a newer ios slows it down enough, i'll just jailbreak it. has a headphone jack, i can listen to music while charging, has a decent enough screen and camera. you don't need the freaking updates.
