get the feeling they just say furries because if you didn't begin the sentence with that people worry about you when you just spout out a graphic murder fantasy

again it's super weird they just selected a fetish at random to have murder fantasies about.

Like if you are a transhumanist and don't want people to be able to become elves if they want what are you even for? Varying forms of "Everyone is a toga-wearing elf around crystal spires of tech so advanced it looks like nature" is your entire idelolgy!

It's really weird. I live abroad now, and I know someone from the UK (older than me) who just watches videos of people in the US apparently just walking in and stealing things from stores because nobody is following the law anymore.

A family member (older than me) describes the well off suburb we grew up in as a mad max warzone that is essentially parallel to what the UK guy described.

When I ask people my age who are still living there, they have no idea what I'm talking about and say it's the same as it's always been.

These people are plugged in to some freakish media.

I call this “context flattening”. Complaining about the morality of a general trend of events to deflect away from the specifics of a current event, usually because the person doing it is implicated by those specifics. Happens a lot with “cancel culture”. Like, literally list out in your head all the situations which people have referred to as someone being “cancelled”. The context is abstracted away to make this seem like a Thing That Happens. It’s a complete construction.

Any whiff of sadism, even ironically or with forced humor. Mentioned to my 80 yr old neighbor about the flooding in CA a while ago and he said "Hopefully it will take out some immagants ha ha"

Admittedly the immagants part was, but I've met people that just like to see others suffer. They get a gleeful look on their face that's quite unmistakable.

        (CW:Child abuse)

I once saw my ex father in law sit on my 10 year old step son with his knees on the kids shoulders and taunt him until the kid was screaming and he and his wife would just laugh and laugh while my ex just sat stoically. And naturally he was a chud/libertarian out in the boonies. He had a look on his face that is the same I see on anyone that likes that kind of thing. I see it on conservative politicians and religious and business people's faces every day.

No, I don't think they do count. It's a reaction and a way to cope with all the fucking horror that happens in the world that will never see any justice. The only thing you can possibly do to cope is to wish that justice served a thousand fold... but ultimately, you know it's never going to happen. I would exchange all violent fantasy, past and future, for those awful things to never have happened, but I can't do that either.

Nah, I'm just making a joke about how linguistic drift has fucked over kinksters, not at all trying to forgive or excuse fash violence. In fact, that's also another side of the same coin in this problem.

The word sadism originally refers to a specific kink of inflicting pain, humiliation, or embarassment on a willing and enjoying partner, but it has been repurposed as a means to describe violently antisocial behaviour.

This linguistic muddling is deliberate, as it casts people who are into sadomasochism as being cruel and abusive to those around them, while also providing cover to those who fantasize about and perform antisocial acts.

It really does suck that American attracts like a magnet the most reactionary portions of every nation in the world. Gusanos, compradors, rightwing "small business owners", self-hating non-white white supremacists, etc.

If I only interacted with Cuban-Americans I would be tempted to become racist, but luckily I have met with some Cuban comrades and doctors while traveling throughout Latin America and it's night-and-day. They really did kick out the worst parts of their nation and dump them into America. Korea, Vietnam & China did this as well on a smaller scale, with a lot of the compradors fleeing to the US when their local power waned.

I like watching history youtube. Sometimes I'll find a new channel, start watching videos, and everything seems fine at first. Hey, they're talking about ancient human migration and how different groups influenced other groups, this is interesting. But then sometimes they start talking about haplogroups just a bit too much and I start to get a queasy feeling that the channel is going in a direction that I'm not going to enjoy.

Oh for sure, any indication that they don't think any people group with darker skin than a paper bag couldn't have built impressive ancient sites is a giant red flag, a flashing light, and a klaxon siren.

I should add that the thing that gets me about the haplogroups is that it seems innocent at first. It's interesting to see how groups of people migrated across the millennia and what effect they had one one another culturally, and DNA is a way of seeing who met and mingled with who. So the first couple of times, in the right context, it seems perfectly reasonable and quite interesting. But then I start noticing it comes up kind of a lot, and I start having questions about this guy's preoccupations and what point he might be driving at. So it's more sneaky than the ancient aliens thing, at least in my experience.

If you ever start a channel, I'd love to watch it! But I certainly understand deciding not to wade into the weird world of being a youtuber. As for recommendations:
*fashion history and actually constructing garments (as you can probably tell, this is a particular interest of mine): Abby Cox, Bernadette Banner, Elin Abrahamsson, Nicole Rudolph, Morgan Downer, Karolina Zebrowska
*bad history debunking, also random topics in history: miniminuteman
*often a focus on LGBTQ history, but not always: Kaz Rowe
*experimental archaeology, kind of I guess? Specifically in Scotland: Fandabi Dozi *Chinese history, also sometimes pop culture criticism: Xiran Jay Zhao

I also use youtube to watch old episodes of Time Team, which I adore. Timeline World History Documentaries are a mixed bag. There are some that are interesting, and a lot I pass on.

Having English as second language I am still not sure when you use the one and the other. So I use female more as describing normative stuff in culture, as stuff is assigned as female.

“Female” is generally a more formal, clinical term. You’d generally see it used in paperwork or medical/scientific documents moreso than day-to-day speech.

For instance, you’d see sex indicated using “male” or “female” on a hospital intake or on a passport specifically. “Girl” and “Woman” would be the go-to for more conversational contexts.

      • TillieNeuen [she/her]
        ·

Basically, if "female" is used as an adjective, it's fine. If it's used as a noun, that's a red flag. A good way to check is to try putting an "s" on the end of the word and see if it makes sense. "I wish people realized that more females drone pilots isn't actually an advance for women's liberation" that doesn't make sense, it's used as an adjective, modifying the noun "pilots." Vs. "Oh hell yes, there are some females at this bar." Oh no, using the plural s makes sense in this context, you're using it as a noun and now even if nobody else can see it, I can see an invisible fedora sitting on your head. If you can pluralize it, it's a noun.

So hilarious/disturbing to hear old conservatives mention a black person's race whenever they are brought up in conversation. Especially American Southerners ofc. Like they'll say it if it's a positive comment to be like "hey I can have a positive thought about a black person, not racist btw"
