Is there anywhere worth living anymore?
New Zealand. Yes Jacinda is a lib and it's Settler-Colonial. But it's relatively neutral in foreign policy, sheltered from the worst of climate change, feeds itself locally and is a fully developed western state that leans significantly left of the rest of the anglosphere (with the possible exception of Scotland)
Berlin just did some kind of crazy rent cap so my friend's rent (she lives in a decent apartment, alone, within walking distance of the main train station) went down to like 350 EUR. That's including heating, water, etc. So, until the landlords succeed in overthrowing the ruling at least, I'm gonna say Berlin.
For real. My flatmate (other city in Germany) won a court case against our landlord so our rent got lowered by half. Which was amazing. And then like a week later he started threatening her with shady stuff so in short we have to move out by March :') Mao Was Right
Jo if you like contact me and tell me if you already given notice. In some cases there is good resistance possible. Esp. with threats of violence from landlords there is currently potential for left wing solidarity resistance (cause some evicted people are pissed of with landlords)
Also eviction processes take ages and are cheap for the renters.
Thank you! It turns out ok for us in the end anyway - my uni's online till October 2021 so I was thinking of saving some money by staying at my family's till then, and my flatmate's applied for a job in a different city. It's more the principle of the thing, you know? He literally convinced some friend to lie in court for him (the friend claimed he was present when my flatmate signed the lease, when he wasn't). And then when the court ruled against him despite his trickery, he decided to continue causing trouble. Douchebag 😂
Good everything worked out for you. I'm case something comes up remember this post or feel free to reach out to the Asta of the universities (student union).
Every country is good if you're rich and bad if you're poor. I hear good things about Finland though.
Cuba's internet is about a dollar an hour through the state ran service.
I posted a video about Cuba's lan networks and mesh nets in /c/technology if you're curious about it.
What Cuba has achieved, especially under economic siege, is amazing, but they are still a developing country under economic siege.
So I guess it depends what you mean when you think "least shitty".
Really? What is China actually like? I never know how much is true and how much of it is "China bad" propaganda.
Whats education and healthcare system like? What's the media like? What kind of stuff gets banned? What's the economy like? Sorry for so many questions.
Education seems like the West. Private’s generally higher quality; state varies, there are excellent state schools (where Party kids go) and less-excellent ones.
Healthcare overall is efficient and pretty cheap. Quality varies. You’ll probably get better treatment if you go private, but I trust public for little things.
Sounds worse and more privatised than the education and healthcare system of many European countries. Sad :(
Well, I hope that works out. I am not the most positive person when it comes to actually reducing privatisation. Would be great for the Chinese, and my optimism.
Some parts of China’s economy are dystopian and hyper-neoliberal, and some parts are fairly left-wing and vestiges from the Mao era. It’s a massive economy with a million different industries, and time will tell if the CPC takes a hold of them, or continues to privatize
Definately not great, but somewhat unsurpsing considering European countries grew to fund such expansive welfare states from the massives proceeds of Imperialism, a "luxuary" which China does not really posses. Whatever our objectives are: ending commodity production, free healthcare, etc., they all are much harder to accomplish when you arent sucking insane amounts of wealth from the rest of the world. I hate that America has been one of the most bloodthirty empires in world history, but i like that this had the unintended consequence of preparing the productive forces and relations of production for an eventual transition to Socialism. But the same is not yet true for China, essentialy what I am saying is America could hit the big red communism button but China cant yet; but hell a lot of places cant even hit the SocDem button because of not only Imperialism but simply the desires of global financial markets, and this rings true for China to an extent too.
unfortunately only works if you're white and have an american accent. happy to be proven wrong though.
By native-english you mean countries like US, Canada, UK etc right? It doesn't matter how well your English is, if you're not white & don't sound white. They'll only consider you if they can't find people who fit that criteria, and even then there's a hierarchy.
'S alright I guess. From what I've seen there are worse places to live. But as for the best place to live, I'd say the country that doesn't exist yet, because you have not yet helped make it.
Yeah, exactly. It is the same everywhere. Being gay in Belgium or in Russia or in Saudi Arabia? No difference.
new zealand and finland. finlands cool because they havent done anything super fucked up in the past 50 years afaik. i dont think they even invaded afghanistan (edit nvm they did)
finland's done fucked up things to the roma there especially in the 70s. maybe not The Worst in terms of european antiziganism, but still not great
Roma kids were put in state-run housing up until later 1970s in the name of assimilation. Just lots of weird things in the name of "assimilation". Speaking the language was illegal too iirc. Also I've heard of Finnish Roma being put into "special needs" schooling for no real reason besides being gypsy (which happens in europe everywhere) even nowadays. Again though, Finland has done some good in terms of fighting against antiziganism. More than a lot of other countries, so could be much worse.
Here's a pretty comprehensive link if you want to read more: https://julkaisut.valtioneuvosto.fi/bitstream/handle/10024/70194/Es200402eng.pdf?sequence=1
yikes
yeah i always got the impression that they were doing much better mostly because they are also a minority language. guess it also makes you willing to fuck over other people
Between extremely stubborn Germans not wanting to speak English and American immigrants expecting 5 star service because they aren't from a poor country, I'll pick the side of Germans
Sadly the Ausländeramt is, or at least was in the past, extremly xenophobic. Service was made uncomfortable on purpose(short opening hours, few offices, isolated locations) people would arrive on 4 in the morning to get a chance at a ticket for a time to talk. And the people there were chosen and trained to reject as many applicants as possible.
I am all for shitting on americans with superiority complexes, but this mostly hits refugees and other vulnerable groups. But my information is relatively old, maybe things have changed.
Australia's alright at the moment.
10/20/30 years? Probably impossible to go outside during Summer.
Yeah, I wouldn't move here permanently. Both ruling parties will 100% have a policy of austerity and privatisation in the future, (as they have done for decades, but this time it's to tackle "the deficit") and like you said we'll be dealing with 50° summers peppered with choking on bushfire smoke.
Add to that the blatant racism baked into Australian society which will only get worse in the next few decades and the growing police and surveillance state, you'll have a perfect recipe for USA II.
have a perfect recipe for USA II.
bruh you guys have been texas with less guns and more white trash since your inception
laughs in climate change
At least we can conquer Canada easily. Yous guys might be screwed idk
Exactly, we're already picking fights with China because daddy USA told us too. We're a shithole country and should never have stolen this land.
I live here, it sucks. Our government is chud as fuck and it's already impossible to go outside in summer.
How could anyone say Australia? It seems like the last wild fire season got erased from the internet by COVID.
That island is one climate change disaster away from total chaos. I'd stay away.
I'm ok telling you guys, but I ain't telling regular lib voters here- I'm pretty sure myself and the people I love will move to Tazzie or NZ before we're caving each others heads in
