I think the biggest thing that Hexbear has going for it is that there is a culture here that doesn't involve pandering to the voting audience.

Every conversation I have here feels like the other person is genuinely talking to me, not talking to an audience through me but talking to me directly, considering my words and seriously engaging with me even when we might disagree.

Over on reddit getting a real interaction with someone that doesn't involve in some way an attempt at pandering to possible voters is nearly impossible. Everything is influenced by the system. Everyone isn't really talking to each other but instead they talk to the audience.

That's a great point. Now that you've articulated it, I think it's the same with other platforms. Now that you've planted the thought… Others doing that wasn't the only thing that turned me away from other platforms. I didn't like that I did the same thing, driven by the algorithms and the cultures.

Yeah I don't like it myself, it feels like there's way more dignity when we're talking personally. Like we all actually think about the other person as a human more. We even make more allowances for mood swings too, people have shit days it happens.

I do agree that is it. I think this may be the fundamental, awful problem with modern-day social media and basically all forms of online interaction, even big Discord servers. To actually have a conversation with someone is basically impossible, you're just only ever people at podiums shouting into the void.

I once made a reference to “genocide Joe” in a chat with a friend who I don’t normally talk politics with. He was confused - not because he thought what was going on in Gaza wasn’t a genocide, but because he had no idea what was even happening in Gaza, much less America’s involvement in it.

Polls on Americans’ opinions on things outside of the Lower 48 are completely pointless given how criminally ignorant most Americans are.

it's crazy when you say something extremely based, but nobody understood because you need to explain the meaning and historical context of 4 words and also 20 minutes catching them up on things that happened in the last 1-20 years.

Polling exists to help media drive whatever narrative they want.

They aren't a great indicator of sentiment, or they tend to only be an indicator of a certain group's sentiment.

      President Poopypants

It doesn't happen much any more but there are rare times I wish I had yet another unbanned alt I could use to post in r/PoliticalHumor. This is one of those times. Posting that could avoid the "not funny" trap even though a lib mod might still nuke it after just 30m or so for other reasons.

I like this place since people aren't gaslighting me about rl experiences or telling me I'm a bot/ai since there's no way xyz happened nor do multiple minorities like me exist. The politics is a big added bonus.

About 16pct there, more unhinged and openly bigoted and you'd have my every third interaction with reddit-logo before I just began mass blocking.

do multiple minorities like me exist

oh like those libs who unironically say, without any even being prompted, that Intersectionality means "oppression olympics" but also oppression doesn't exist in general (therefore you're lying) (except you existing is oppressing them).

Yeah, when that friend stopped talking to me I ceased to have anyone to talk to about things like politics, fashion, media, etc., because I’m homeless, and every single person in my social milieu is either a fucking idiot, or if they have any interests at all that overlap with mine, they’re fucking insane and only want to talk about stupid shit like Morgellons disease, and drones.

There are a handful of topics that would be effectively impossible to talk about anywhere else because of the minefield of reactionary thought terminating cliches baked into Western culture. That is, so long as we didn't just have a struggle session boarding that topic.
