Rebr0 would have just perma banned the accuser and made a thread mocking them. The sooner we can distance ourselves from the old sub and probably chapo at large (except for Matt, he good) the better honestly. This community is :100-com: more grounded than the sub ever was. The old sub was irony poisoned to death, whereas here we have a healthy amount of detachment.

Yeah chapo.chat really is great. I think this site has done a really good job at keeping some of the best aspects of the subreddit while getting rid of its worst excesses.

Most complaints about chapo.chat I've seen stem from the idea that we take ourselves too seriously; that we believe posting is praxis or something. But I haven't seen much of that personally, at least not at levels any worse than what was going on with the subreddit.

The biggest difference is that we prioritize the concerns of our marginalized comrades more than the subreddit did. Would definitely rather stick with that than return to the irony-poisoned culture of the old subreddit.

the us prioritizing concerns of the marginalized and taking things too serious are connected for them, in my view.

there are people who just dont vibe with doing things online or whatever and i respect that but most of those throwing that around usually are ironically detached terminally online dinguses that ended up outing themselves as class reductionists later and just think we're taking things to seriously by actually giving a shit instead of just shitposting "borderline" racist and ableist jokes all day.

on rebros twitter they posted up there, he's making fun of our logo and someone was like "hue hue the last one was banned for being to ableist" lol yea, sorry the community isn't a fan of people coming here and throwing the r-slur around casually. youre so cool.

Yeah posting as praxis is seen as a fun in-joke rather than an actual dogma which is good. That's what I love about it here, that we boost the voice of our marginalized comrades.

I also never liked his hair-trigger banning style, it made the mod team look shitty

His fun little trick was banning you for "abusing the report button". I was on the receiving end of that once.

I highly doubt it. In all likelihood it'd be one of the cumtown splinter communities, as they've been angry at us for banning their users and they've been trying to doxx members of the community. Granted, they tend to fixate specifically on trans users, but I think Beatnik was simply an easier target due to being much more open about himself and being the founder. Stupidpol or some random chuds could've done it as well.

I get he's kind of being obnoxious and bitter, but he's never done anything like this before. Like false SA accusations are extremely rare because most people just don't have it in them to do something that fucked up, it'd probably be whoever's mad about SA accusations being taken more seriously and nothing this dude's done suggests he's a hardline antifeminist. The people who keep albums of revenge porn to dosx women with seem like a much more likely culprit than some random ass salty Reddit mod.

This is SOP for Reddit, generally speaking. Admins will apply the same scorched earth approach to the Mods themselves, if the Mods aren't complicit. And even when the Mods are complicit... well... nods head towards the blacked char of the original subreddit.

As someone who was rolling up a new Reddit account every six months or so, this community has been a decided breath of fresh air, give or take a StruggleSession.

If the Coyote's goal is simply to feed himself why doesn't he just eat the steaks jesus christ

Also I suspect this memory is the Mandela effect in action, the Coyote had a tendency to set traps like these using birdseed which as an obligate carnivore he cannot eat

Counterpoint: The Coyote is a dumb motherfucker who once bought a superman outfit and thought it could make him fly, so jumped off a cliff. That one definitely genuinely happened.

Countercounterpoint: The Coyote actually can fly. It does not fall until made aware that it's no longer on solid ground. As long as it isn't aware of gravity it is fine, suggesting that the falling is due to some sort of strong self doubt. Buying the costume might have been an attempt to trick itself into overcoming this self-doubt.

A collection of subreddits actively blacklisted Gawker for "doxxing" ViolentAcrez (despite the dude's willingness to get interviewed and having made merch of his Snoo avatar) and claimed that was free speech. Doting and loving essays about how ViolentAcrez made them the mods they were today and helped them moderate. Fucking barf.

Ugh, you're right, forgot about that.

To a certain extent, if we're organizing in real life, our politics and identities are going to be connected anyway. This would be a nightmare to deal with in a real life scenario.

I think this might just be an ongoing risk in this brave new world of ours.

Yeah, but I think at least part of being a political person entails being a public person. More power to our Antifa super spies who want to go the route of radical privacy, but I'm not sure if that's effective for building political power in the long-term. Perhaps that's not the role of this site, though. I'm not sure where its mission statement stands these days tbh. Is it a pipeline? Shit posting haven? Just a club for cool commies? The best approach will largely be determined by what this space is. That might be largely subjective for each user too I guess.

Seriously, make an account for diary stuff, for talking about your daily life (still be careful and don't doxx yourself but feel more free to talk about your area in broad terms, etc) and a second one for sensitive stuff like politics, modding, etc. Too many people just cannot resist chatting up about their life and things that can in the end be used to doxx them, people are social creatures, it's fine, but this is why we need to take steps like this. Keep them completely separate and use different names and emails so they cannot be tied back to you by anyone other than the NSA.

Absolutely handled in the correct and professional manner. I stand by the mods here with the way they've handled this. Looking back on it now, it's pretty obvious this was a set up from the jump but it's always best to side with the accusers and believe them until things can get sorted out. We stuck to our guns on this one and showed we have principles we're willing to hold ourselves to and that's commendable.

I'm seeing some comments from people who are concerned that this event has negatively affected our reputation. For me at least, it's done quite the opposite.
I've been a part of other online communities that have also had predators called out, and those were an absolute garbage fire. Everything from instamt bans to hate speech to just being completely ignored. At no point in time did any of the people conducting the investigations tell the rest of the community what steps were being taken. It wasn't clear to anyone what was valid, who to trust, and whether the mods even knew what standards they had.
Our mods here handled this with the thoughtfulness, introspection, and respect that reaffirms my faith in them. The comments by the rest of the community were (like 85%) constructive and focused, and I found them providing support for the whole process, mods and accuser alike.
Situations like this will always be a stress test. I feel a lot better now, having seen what our community's response is, that we're able to appropriately respond to both unverifiable as well as to true sexual predator accusations on this site in the future.
Joke's on you wreckers, I trust my comrades even more now 🖕🖕:af-heart:

I think the mods and admins did an excellent job in handling this. There were several details in the accuser's posts that set off red flags for me:

    1. When asked to provide information that can be used to verify that the accuser knows Beatnik IRL, she only presented details that can be found in his account histories. I found the inclusion of the obscure details on his family crest to be especially suspicious, considering that this is a very specific and obscure detail about Beatnik that can be found in his account histories.
    2. Not only did the accuser refuse to communicate privately with the admins when given multiple avenues to do so, the accuser went out of their way to post Beatnik's private information on the website, which is literally doxxing. Even if Beatnik were guilty, this is not okay. Doxxing someone is never okay.
    3. The accusations that the admins/mods changed the accuser's password on her main account and snooped through her DMs really was the nail in the coffin for me. I find it so incredibly unlikely that anyone has the ability to do these things, except for perhaps one or two people on the dev team.

Considering all of this, it is very obvious that this was an attempt to attack the website, and Beatnik was chosen as a target because of his position as an admin and because of his poor opsec. It especially sucks that Beatnik was doxxed. Unfortunately, people who dislike the website will continue to bring this up until the end of time, accusing us of protecting an abuser and dismissing SA victims. Anyone who is looking at this rationally can see that there these accusations are completely unsubstantiated, and I agree that we should disregard them entirely moving forward (unless, of course, additional evidence were presented). I am sorry Beatnik has had to through this, and I really hope he can feel comfortable returning to the site.

I also want to comment that I am really impressed with how the admins, mods, Beatnik, and the entire community handled this. Although this situation still really sucks, the way it was handled has given me renewed hope in the future of this community. Additionally, I agree with other users that we need to be a lot more critical in the case of future allegations. Admins/mods/powerusers will absolutely be targeted again.
