My guess is Ukrainian govt was still bigmad over Russia taking their territory and so they wanted to see if they could ratchet up tension to get the west to change their mind? Otherwise none of this makes sense.
Maybe it has more to do with the fact that if the rus.fed was serious about its demilitarization and denazification war goals, there's not an insignificant number of certain kinds of people that would be targeted should the Ukranian state capitulate to the Russian state. After all those certain kinds of people value their lives millions of more times than the value of those they send in harms way.
The US made an investment and they are going to get some results god damn it.
I think it's interesting that the US tried to cover their tracks more than usual with Euromaidan, then got sloppy on and off onward. I essentially view this as a proxy war between the US and Russia and the US views Ukrainian forces as disposable mercenaries. We only know what we know, but I see a convergence of anti-Russian fascists who are willing to die for their ideology, and US handlers who have been feeding and aiming them for the last 8 years.
Perhaps the US actually has a long-term plan and weakening Russias economy while gathering intel on their capabilities and strategy in the moment is key.
Continue this so capital from Europe fled to them, weaken Russian so they could get final showdown with China.
