On this day in 1921, the Cork Transport Workers' Union took possession of the Harbour Board's offices and assumed complete control of the local port, forming a workers' soviet until negotiations could be resolved.
The Cork Harbour Strike was a labor dispute that lasted from September 2nd to September 7th, 1921. It was the result of the refusal of the Cork Harbor Board to increase the wages of its workers to a minimum of 70s a week.
On September 6th, 1921, the Cork Transport Workers' Union took possession of the Harbour Board's offices and assumed complete control of the port.
According to the New York Times, "when the strikers took possession of the Harbour Board offices, they hoisted a red flag as a token of Soviet control and the strikers' leaders announced their intention of collecting dues from shipping agents and using them to pay members of the union."
The rebellion was short-lived, however, as negotiations between the Harbour Board and the strikers were reopened soon after, which came to a successful resolution. The revolt was not well-taken in the press.
The Irish Times wrote "To-day Irish Labour is permeated with a spirit of revolt against all the principles and conventions of ordered society. The country's lawless state in recent months is partly responsible for this sinister development, and the wild teachings of the Russian Revolution have fallen on willing ears."

Posting from my sterile living room in a suburban neighborhood devoid of wildlife or threats: The true essence of human nature is to fight for survival. After all, good times breed soft men. Stoicism is a sub school of cynicism. depending on who you ask it adopted epicurean elements. Less being a absolutely removed from society and more being free to enjoy stuff. I 'm personally pro-stoicism people just need to get good at it and they will be less annoying.
I'm a bit more crank about it, where Stoicism is the "Roman Christianity" of Kynicism; taking a contemporary ideological critique of a culture and reformatting it so that it is no longer in conflict with and even accomadating to the same culture previously being critiqued by its very existence.
China will no longer use dollars to pay for russian gas :xicko:
know what fucking blows?
This blower motor, omg I can't hear myself think and I have to yell at coworkers to be heard.
I'm starting to think that maybe this working thing isn't good for us, my dude.
Vacuum cleaner?
The Dutch word for vacuum cleaner is literally "dust sucker", another L for English
I don't understand why subtitles aren't mandatory for everything, the people making these shows and movies have the fucking scripts but I guess fuck deaf people lol
for real though. plus it isnt only for deaf people, it feels like half the shit put out these days has obnoxiously loud music playing while all the actors are muttering, making subtitles a necessity
oh yeah like I'm not deaf but I turn on subtitles 100% of the time because I can't hear half the shit people are saying
I also wish I could rewind in 5 second increments because I very often miss like, literally a single statement, but woops I have to go back and watch like 15-30 seconds to hear that little bit I missed :angery:
i saw the northman in theaters, and i liked it but i couldn't tell half of what was going on. thank god it's not a particularly complex story and half the main characters dialogue is just him spelling out his motivations, which helps
At least part of it is that a lot of media is shot + mixed for 5.1 or higher sound setups, which expects a center speaker to exist for dialogue to be sent to.
It then gets downmixed for the 99.9% of us who don't have that speaker setup and the canonical downmix ratios are, in a word, bullshit idealism, and will make dialogue less loud than it should be compared to music and sound effects.
i get being able to turn them off, i know some people find them distracting, but it should really be the opposite of what it is now, subtitles should be the default and if i want to see a showing of nope without subtitles there's 1 per day and 2 on sundays
I ain't even talking about like in theaters stuff, like, random tv shows streaming at home, it should be mandatory to have subtitles and it's crazy that it isn't an actual legal requirement
I don't really look at usernames. I treat you all as an amorphous blob its better this way.
yeah same, plus I purge my usernames every few months and assume most people do, at least they should
You have realized cats are predators. You need to get them some prey ears.
