There was a (probably dairy funded) study arguing that chocolate milk was a better post workout drink than Gatorade because. Turns out it was because it had carbs and your body needs carbs after a marathon. Anyways, a little later they came out with "post workout" Gatorade, with extra carbs in it, so now everyone's a winner.

salt helps a lot actually. i had issues with dehydration because my salt levels were so low. would cause headaches all the time. fixed that and they went away
That'd be hyponatremia, which is also extremely common in runners, has similar symptoms as dehydration, but is more accurately thought of as over hydration. It sounds a bit ridiculous but it's pretty common and quite dangerous especially because most people will drink more water when they really need electrolytes/salt and having more plain water will make it worse.

If I'n drinking something for hydration my top priority is that it also has a ton of sugar in it.

Some of this is just because I've grown accustomed to it with an american diet(:amerikkka-clap:) but I think it's also because I need my brain running so much with so little sleep it needs a lot of readily available energy constantly. IDK, maybe that's no how nutrition works.
Yeah you really just need water and maybe a little salt if you're really sweating up a storm. Sugar and flavors just make it more palatable and marketable as a beverage that can compete with soda.

Following the rabbit hole of the study cited shows it being funded by the "European Hydration Institite", which has a website that hasn't been updated since 2014 but is headed up by someone with 3 decades of dairy marketing experience and some of the coauthors of this study. Fairly transparently a way to funnel dairy industry marketing money to the primary authors who then, conveniently, find greater hydration from dairy under very specific setups.
The study itself is from 2015 and is the centerpiece of an article... 8 years later, for no reported reason. The actual reason, of course, is that the dairy industry is currently doing a rebranding of their marketing and is having a predictably easy time getting US media outlets to provide them with free advertising. There are even articles that are just about the rebranding effort itself, with no bullshit "science" excuse.
