For our fourth and final Astro Boy edition of Saturday Anime Night, we’re not wrapping up just one Astro Boy series, but five of them. We will watch the last episodes of Astro Boy (1963), Astro Boy (1980), Astro Boy (2003), and Atom: The Beginning (2017), followed by the last two episodes (7 and 8) of dark Astro Boy reimagining Pluto (2023)! We’ll laugh. We’ll cry. We’ll say goodbye to Astro a few times over. If you’ve already tuned in for the previous Astro nights, you know the drill. If not, we’ll help you get up to speed. If not, just know that we have watched all these versions of Astro Boy to contextualize the centerpiece of these anime nights, Pluto (2023), which is an adaptation of the manga of the same name by Naoki Urasawa (otherwise best-known for Monster); it is a dark reimagining of the legendary Astro Boy arc “The Greatest Robot in the World”, concerning robo-assassin Pluto’s quest to destroy the world’s seven strongest bots. It has received rave reviews from all corners, so we will finish it off tonight.
