People are obsessed with Putin and think he created this entire situation out of his evil megalomaniac brain. I wish it was as simple as bad man bad if bad man dies everything is good. Do people really believe this or are they weak and fragile minded. Or just not interested in the history and mechanisms that lead to mass death.

I don't know about that. If there's one word to describe Putin, its Decisive. Putin's a committed nationalist - one reason why all those Russian Resets from Bush Jr to Obama to Trump always failed.

This is no less than the fourth major border war in his administration. The only reason its more notable than Crimea in '14 or Georgia in '08 or Chechnya in '99 is that Americans suddenly became deeply invested in a country with so many blonde haired, blue eye mail order brides.

It's liberal-brain, where the most "revolutionary" thing that can happen is just putting a different captain at the helm of the same ol' ship and expecting everything to magically be completely different.

Liberals love great man theory as the alternative is historical materialism, which is Marxism and therefore bad. This is why you can find entire TV channels consisting mostly of shows about Hitler while stuff about social and economic conditions in interwar Germany is scarce.

This war is going to be explained as the epic battle between evil crazy Soviet dictator Putin and sexy democratic heroic underdog Zelensky and there's nothing we can do about it.

Any attempts at understanding conditions in the Ukraine or relations between Russia, the Ukraine and the west in a broader perspective is going to be fiercely denounced as Russian disinformation.

I think people really do believe that one man somehow steers an entire nation of one hundred and forty million people because he's just that scary or something. Never mind that he rules thanks to the complicated loyalty of a class of billionaire oligarchs, or that there's a vast bureaucracy, or the complicity of many thousands and thousands of government officials, police officials, military officers, and so on and so forth. Nations aren't complex phenomena emerging from the actions of many millions of people. It's just this one guy.

I think the pushing of the Great Man narrative serves a couple of propaganda functions. If Hitler really was the sole driving will of the entire Nazi state then getting rid of Hitler magically cleanses the Germans of all their crimes and ill deeds. If Stalin was the sole actor driving the Soviet Union during the Holodomor and the Great Purge then the post 1953 Soviet leadership can wash their hands of all ill deeds done by simply declaring deStalinization. Just don't ask what they were up to in 1933 or 1937. Americans can blame the nuke on Truman and absolve themselves of bloodthirsty, racially driven mania for revenge. Mao was personally responsible for the great famine and Cultural Revolution, it wasn't the collective actions of tens of millions of people. It simplifies everything. People don't have the education or knowledge to make sense of huge, multilayered, extremely complicated social and economic phenomena. Everything is the action of indvidual Great Men. And, for propaganda purposes, changing the Great Man can magically change an entire country or movement. Killing Osama bin Laden was utterly insignificant, the pointless murder of an old man and his family. It caused no operational impairment to al Qaeda, it was simply an act of revenge. But it was hailed as some kind of great victory. Killing Saddam didn't bring back any of the people he murdered or change the course of Iraqi politics. The man was literally hiding in a hole in the ground, as abject a position as you could be in. But, again, it's hailed as a significant event. I'm not as clear on Gaddafi because I don't know much about the internal structure of Gaddafi's Libya, but I feel that the killing of Gaddafi was a symbolic closure of an already existing change of power.

He was directly responsible, but the UK had been fucking that region for centuries. If not Churchill, Neville Chamberlain or Harold Macmillan would have done something similar.

Libs will see your point about nations being run by more than 1 guy, and use it to justify being bigoted towards the entire nations population. Ideally also trying to murder them either directly or indirectly.

They hate Russia and Russians, plain and simple. It's racism that predates the 1917 Revolution, when it really kicked into high gear. It's acceptable to liberals because "they're white".

Putin is simply an avatar for that hatred, and a convenient one at that because he's a white, right-wing, nationalist that's acts kinda Trump-like who's also friendly with China and speaks positively of the USSR (even if he denounces communism frequently).
