Is this guy good? He seems like a huge dork, not that that's necessarily relevant to his reporting chops, I kinda like him

The shortcomings of his reporting so far IMO are more a result of the circumstances. That is, being an embedded reporter in a military force, you are going to see the places they want you to see, and you are going to be steered away from the places they don't want you to see. Also, it is not the kind of reporting where you are going to see much criticism of the actions taken by the military either from the reporter or the people being interviewed under implicit duress. None the less, a lot of the footage speaks for itself, and it is a perspective barely anybody else is covering in English. I can't think of anybody else doing this to be honest.

Russia and Western have a completely different "War Reporting game" .. look at the West .. they sit in the Capital commenting on anecdotes..

Russia like (ANNA news) is way more on the Front .. but way more Footage... way more near to the LoC and therefore catching much more insidefull stuff..

The Western style of reporting has gotten to the point where it's like "Something is going on in Kazakhstan right now, but Instagram is down so we don't know what." The media institutions have been completely hollowed out except for a handful of national and regional giants which still have the resources to send out international correspondents, but they are so dependent on state intelligence sources that they will never end up sending them to a place they could actually reveal anything useful. Either due to ignorance, or concern about upsetting their powerful intelligence contacts.

It is kind of a colloquial understanding, but the last conflict that had substantial live coverage of this sort was the Vietnam war, and it is generally understood to be significant catalyst to the domestic opposition to the war. Since then, the empire has maintained a much more curated media portrayal of its wars, if it chooses to portray them at all. If they have to make a broadcast from Baghdad, it will be a special edition of WWE Smackdown filmed inside the walls of a military base.

Huh, like how soldiers in WW1 had Mad Libs letter templates to send to their families to tell them they’re still alive without ever saying any real information.

some of his interviews with locals have been informative, since you know primary source, and you can tell it's not canned when people give the vibe of "here's how it is now fuck off we've been hiding in this dark basement for almost a month and you're kind of weird"
