On this day in 1978, one of the first strikes of the British "Winter of Discontent" began when 15,000 Ford workers, mostly from the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), began an unofficial strike.
The Winter of Discontent took place during 1978-79 in the United Kingdom, characterized by widespread strikes from both private and public sector trade unions. Some of these industrial disputes caused great public inconvenience, exacerbated by the coldest winter in 16 years in which severe storms isolated many remote areas of the country.
On September 22nd, 1978, one of the first strikes of the "Winter of Discontent" began when 15,000 Ford workers, mostly from the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), began an unofficial strike.
The number of participants later grew to 57,000. As the months progressed, workers from multiple industries went on strike, including lorry drivers, garbage collectors, and gravediggers. It was the largest UK labor stoppage since 1926.
The Winter was a disaster for the incumbent Labour Party. The magazine Socialist Worker quoted one council worker as saying "We had to strike because Labour betrayed us".
The Labour Party was swept out of power in the 1979 election, leading to the premiership of Margaret Thatcher.

recipe: use 1-2 cloves of garlic
me, every time: must be a misprint, let's use 4-5
except there was that one time a coworker told me I stank of garlic :bawllin-sad:
idk she was an okay coworker though aside from that one comment
have you tried taking a photo of her/seeing if she has a reflection in the mirror
recipe: use a pinch of salt.
Imma take the shaker and keep shaking it for 30 secs. That should be enough.
Shaker?? dawg you gotta up your game, get a grinder, for pepper and one for salt
hmm maybe.
but, like, life is a grind, already, you know?
sea salt with that fine grind will help alleviate the pain
is that the himalayan pink salt thingy? i love that one!
nah sea salt is just salt that doesn't have iodine added to it and is nominally collected from the sea but you can put the pink salt in a grinder too if it's coarse enough
Salt cellar. I just have a small bucket of kosher salt on hand at all times in the kitchen for generous tossing in. Life changing.
My cat demonstrated that she can turn on the stove to maximum heat simply by standing on the touch capacitive power button. Even the lock function is useless because it only takes holding the power button for a bit longer.
My cat is going to burn down my apartment

My mom told me that this morning, one of the family cats suddenly died. It may have been of a heart attack. She seemed fine all morning, until she meowed and then fell over, her pupils dilated. Her heart beat slowly, she breathed a little, and then coughed a couple of times, and that was it. It was sudden.
The Winter was a disaster for the incumbent Labour Party. The magazine Socialist Worker quoted one council worker as saying “We had to strike because Labour betrayed us”.
This is bad.
The Labour Party was swept out of power in the 1979 election, leading to the premiership of Margaret Thatcher.
THIS IS WORSE.

Every time I see the United Farm Workers flag my brain says "NAZIS!" for a moment before I remember no, the UFW just sort of superficially resembles it.
Either way they're mobilizing in California right now to try to get better rights and protections for farm workers.
Jesus Christ you’re not kidding, why the fuck did they choose that design
Here's one site that purports to tell the history. Apparently Cesar Chavez had a direct hand in designing it.
All of that makes sense, but come on, it was in the 1960s and you know what the Nazi flag looked like. You can use all of that symbolism without making a flag that looks like the Nazis.

any of y'all ever get to the point where you're writing code and realize you need to stop because you're making a confusing mess just because you're too tired? I was halfway into 3 half-baked ideas - each partially implemented before the realization dawned on me that I needed to log off. making extra work for future silent_water is not cool! sometimes I just muddle through it and get something mostly working but that was just not happening today. can't really implement an algorithm if you can't even clearly articulate what the algorithm is supposed to do.
I'm working too much but I have an external deadline for the end of the month. the PR for my portion of the work is fucking 5k lines of code (including tests) and I wrote most of that in the last week. I'm so tired but also so close to finishing.
Yeah there are times where I just keep coding thinking I'm in the "flow" when actually I'm just following a bad idea because I didn't plan
I had the opposite happen to me the other day, I had a clear idea of what I was trying to do, but I had eaten too many carbs so actually doing it was like wading through waist-deep water
USPS wouldn't deliver my GPU because I wasn't there to sign for it. Okay, fair enough I guess, but I work six days a week so how am I supposed to be there to sign for it? Okay so I schedule a redelivery to my work, my coworker gets all his packages there. It doesn't show up and I don't get any followup. I can't re-reschedule because the first reschedule is still in the system even though it says "expired". And I can't drive to the Post Office to get it myself because I don't have a car. First world problems but come the heck on, USPS.
