For this triple-feature edition of Sunday Slop Night, we’re starting early by fulfilling a request for Cuban proletarian romance One Way or Another (1977). It is considered one of the best representatives of Cuba’s Imperfect Cinema movement, blending documentary-style records of the living conditions of common people with fictional stories of their everyday struggles. In this case, the story centers on a romance between two Afro-Cubans in a poor neighborhood. The director is Sara Gomez, one of the few black female filmmakers in the world at the time; she died of asthma shortly after filming, leaving this as her sole feature. Reviews are excellent for this one, so let’s check it out. The second film tonight is also romantic, albeit of a different, dreamier style: His Motorbike, Her Island (1986), from renowned Japanese auteur Nobuhiko Obayashi (also known for House [1977] and The Rocking Horsemen [1992].) It concerns a dude who breaks up with his girlfriend, and then takes up a nomadic biker lifestyle, meeting a new lady along the way, to whom he teaches the way of the bike. This is apparently of Obayashi’s best, so let’s give it a whirl. Third and last is John Woo’s Bullet in the Head (1990), a John Woo action flick about a group of gangsters who relocate to Saigon during the Vietnam War in hopes of starting a profiteering racket. Things go poorly for them. Reviews rave about this one, so we’re watching it.
