There's probably a million people who say this exact thing and out of that maybe ten of them have a legitimate medical problem that couldn't be solved by ordering a 9 dollar bottle of supplements from amazon. They're just pathological narcissists who want an excuse to continue reproducing their consumer identity in a way that's comfortable for them.
I really don't care if you eat meat, but trying to make your bad consumer habits into an issue of social justice is just narcissism and nothing more.
reminds me of the person who said they couldnt live without the electrolytes provided to them by slamming 3 gatoraids per day, and thats why they couldnt do some kinda boycott or whatever. even if that were true why wouldnt you just stay quiet about it
There's something so innocent and pure about someone needing more electrolytes in their diet and thinking "mmm gatorade" instead of googling "good sources of electrolytes"
Well, to be fair, they might need several 9 dollar bottles of supplements, and an hour consultation with a nutritionist to tell them what they need.
It's not really bullshit, some people struggle to absorb certain nutrients from plants and supplementation doesn't always work. Then there's stuff like bioavailability of nutrients, etc. Not even bringing up eating disorders.
Thanks for giving consideration to eating disorders. That's something I rarely see discussed in this context, but it is definitely relevant.
I have a friend that has these issues. She genuinely wants to be vegan, but just can't.
I am diabetic (managed through diet) and I can't eat starchy plants, period. Rice, beans, sweet potato- etc. Can't do it, I get ill and have severe blood sugar spikes. Grains? NOPE!
I've limited my meat intake as much as possible, switched to plant based milk, and I'm looking forward to lab grown options.
I find that it's more helpful to encourage people to do what they can to reduce meat intake instead of snapping at them and putting them on the defensive.
Carbohydrates are processed as sugar in the body as well as an excess of protein. I'm on a high fat, mid protein, and low carb diet.
I've lost 100 pounds, my fatty liver stopped being fatty, and my A1c dropped to 4.8.
Even "slow carbs" dont work for me, and I got severe brain fog/migrains, gut problems, and severe inflammation last time I attempted to eat a high fiber/low fat diet a few months ago.
I still eat a lot of non root veg, tofu, and nuts/seeds, and I don't eat dairy- but it's really hard to reach my protein macro without going over my carb macro. My body just can't handle sugar.
It's something I'm willing to keep experimenting with tho.
yeah i have crohns and i really dont know if I could go vegan while flaring. like almost all of the meat substitutes are crohns triggers lol
so we just need better supplements! this is only a defense in the short term and hardly even that
in the replies:
plant based future would also not have a lot of indigenous people in it.
:jesse-wtf:
how would anyone go about restricting rural indigenous folk from hunting?
Being shitty to them while trading/selling animal goods. I’ve personally heard stories of being harassed both in person and online by vegans.
how are they buying or selling animal goods to vegans if they are rural?
Pressuring their state to further restrict their hunting rights or ability to trade their products in other locales (for an example, see the documentary “the angry inuk” about the effect animal rights protests have on indigenous seal hunters)
maybe I misinterpreted what you wrote but I was imagining actually rural indigenous folk. Like rural enough that their groceries can be 5-20x what they are in urban areas. If they are that remote itd be impossible to actually enforce any hunting restrictions. A lso in states like Oklahoma indigenous folk have their own land still and typically do not follow state restrictions on said land . The simple solution would be to continue that olive branch.
These hunting practices are thousands of years old and deeply ingrained in their culture
cool, doesnt fucking matter
i dunno if this is the point he's trying to make, but i've seen indigenous people (not from north america, from the south) saying veganism is white guilt (agreed) bullshit (not that much) and any sort of imposition would just be another attempt to "civilize" them
Of course you just have to look at all these vegans insisting indigenous populations abandon their traditional ways of life gestures wildly to basically no one
if veganism ever became mainstream and it wasn't within a socialist project, it would be imposed upon these populations in no time, let's not kid ourselves
they all know white vegans would treat a cow with far more respect than they would people of color
i'm not saying i agree (except with the white part; it's definitely true in brazil), i'm saying i understand their point and their skepticism
it's me, i'm that vegan
hunting isn't fine because it's tradition or some bullshit
if you can stop doing it then stop doing it
veganism is white guilt (agreed)
Vegans in the US are less likely to be white than the general population by a hefty margin.
The stereotype of white vegans isn't held up by reality.
no u see when the state of kansas bans meat eating theyll arm all the bison with shotguns to defend themselves from dangerous hunters
love to see more and more reactionary positions communicated in woke tiktok zoomer speak what a bright future:agony-shrooms:
I'm a meat eater and this is stupid. No disabled people? Yeah I'm sure vegans are gonna kill everyone in a wheelchair and all the hearing impaired because like 1000 people at the absolute most i can imagine physically cannot be vegan. I find it dramatically more likely some tiny amount of meat production, maybe just blood production or something idk, or perhaps ethical hunting would occur for this tiny tiny amount of people.
Or just straight up lab grown meat. We're getting closer and closer to it being indistinguishable, and removing the moral argument, there will be massive strides in lessening the carbon impact.
yeah lab grown eggs, chicken, and blood are already reaching mass scale in china. give it another 10 years and itll be way more common
For anyone like,
hunting? what?
It's certainly morally better than factory farming, for several reasons, most of which are obvious to the audience here. But many don't consider:
Firstly, in many places, hunting is a replacement for extinct natural predators, and fills a massive gap in the food chain. Those populations need to be restored, but that will never happen if certain prey species aren't managed, because for instance deer can overgraze, wipe out certain herbivores, destroy cover for rodents, cause swings and crashes in raptor populations, and literally create soil erosion and damage the geography of areas.
Secondly, when you assume it's a wild animal being hunted, remember what a wild animal is. And remember that animal welfare is about what happens to animals, not specifically about what people do.
CW: death
If you are a wild animal, you will die in one of three primary ways:
- getting shot in the heart, wondering what the fuck that noise was, and falling over
- traumatic injury leading to constant unremitting pain, disability and slow, excruciatingly painful starvation
- having wild dogs plunge their head into your ass to pull out your intestines while you watch for 2 or 3 hours
"I can't go vegan because my body is special and needs animal products" is a classic carnist line of defense.
Like eat a vitamin lmao.
It's like telling someone you can only eat candy because you're diabetic
Oh shit, we were literally minutes away from banning all meat and forcing everyone to be vegan at gunpoint. Maybe we can convince the super-powerful vegan lobby to only end 95% of meat production, and issue special ration cards for people with dietary issues. This is definitely a really important concern that everyone needs to hear right now.
I dunno what medical condition they may have, but thiamine is found in legumes and enriched whole grains so it's not only found in meat. Same with iron, things like spinach have a high level of iron content you just have to also eat something with calcium around the same time to encourage iron absorption
I mean legumes lose certain nutrients like thiamine during soaking and nutrition. The process of cooking is also required to actually digest the nutrients though. 1 cup of cooked beans has the same vitamin B1 content as 1/3 cup raw dried beans, which is around 0.4mg. So you'd need to eat 3 cups, or 540g of beans to get enough thiamine. And if a person is already struggling to absorb vitamin B1 in the first place, they'd probably need more.
Much better vegan sources of thiamine is stuff like vegan mince/burgers/meat substitutes, soy milk and Marmite (nutritional yeast). The concentration is much higher and even someone that struggles to absorb thiamine should be golden with stuff like that.
I would add flax seeds but it's very hard to eat a significant quantity of them lol.
also do not eat uncooked kidney beans they are poisonous, lentils too but less so
beans actually need to be cooked right
Of course you shouldn't eat uncooked food, that should go without saying.
Yeah but there's a difference between some raw bell peppers which are delicious and safe, and trying to eat dry raw beans, which can be pretty harmful as you said.
I thought most people knew this? I can't imagine someone trying to chow down some raw beans.
I thought I'd reiterate because you mentioned losing nutrients during soaking that you can't eat unprepared beans

You know that soaking and cooking beans makes them about 3x as big right?
Idk if you’re serious so uhh…
The b1 water soluble. It goes into the soak and cook water. It’s not just creative vitamin accounting.
If a cup of dried beans had idk, nine grams of thiamin in it, and they got three times bigger but lost two thirds of their thiamin when cooked, then how many grams of thiamin are you gonna get when you eat your reasonable one cup serving of cooked beans?
That’s right! One gram!
It doesn’t matter that the beans expanded when cooking because the thiamin isn’t in them anymore.
This is true of all b-vitamins btw. Save your aquafaba.
There's also shitloads of thiamine in energy drinks lol
I doubt it has to be said, but there have been and continues to be entire food cultures that were vegan... ancient Inuds Valley civilizations all the way to plenty of Indians today, plenty of Mediterranean diets were vegatarian or vegan (Pythagoras was said to avoid killing and hunters and also didn't eat beans, and he lived long enough to be killed for some other bullshit lol)
entire food cultures that were vegan…
They weren't vegan, they were vegetarian. India has the most diary cows of any country in the world.
There's plenty of Jains who are pretty strict, I know lots use dairy but there's always been plenty that don't.
There has yet to be discovered a medical condition that absolutely requires meat. There are anemic vegans. There's plenty of plant based foods high in iron.
Sure, if you have some sort of condition you might need to plan your food out a bit more or supplement more... but you have to do that anyway if you're an omni with anemia, for example.
These types usually break into 2 groups:
-
People like this poster who will actually name their condition but clearly haven't bothered researching how to make vegan diet work with their condition (the smaller group IMO).
-
People say they can't go vegan because of unnamed "conditions" or imply they tried going vegan for a few days and they felt dizzy (the larger group).
-
Saying "A plant based future won't have disabled people in it" is a massive exaggeration, but yes there do exist people with specific dietary needs and nutrient deficiencies for which "just supplement bro" is not a realistic solution. That said, I do support the vegan movement. My problem with the privileged protestors dumping milk in this video is that they can afford to do so. It would have been better for them to just steal a shit ton of milk and give it all to a homeless shelter rather than wasting the resource. That way they steal the profits from the dairy industry and also help people in need. Tipping it out onto the floor for some minimum wage janitor to clean up is fucking stupid.

Freegans are morally superior to vegans
if you don't eat (or help someone else eat) some meat that would otherwise go to waste, that animal died for no reason, which decades of :cracker: media has informed me is worse than dying for some purpose.
opportunism doesn't contribute to demand.
Cats taste terrible. They have a lot of ammonia in their tissues. Most predators have the same issue.
shut up nerd
i havent even formulated a take on this
but you are being annoying
Truthfully there are like 40 freegans in existence, I don't know if it's a relevant position
there do exist people with specific dietary needs and nutrient deficiencies for which “just supplement bro” is not a realistic solution.
how the hell does that work
at worst maybe we don't have the right form of supplement YET but you don't need magical food essence to absorb stuff
Supplements may not be as bioavailable as food forms. For example, some people have trouble absorbing iron even from organic chelated iron supplements, but much more readily absorb iron from liver.
I mean that's sort of what these ridiculous stunts like the "milk dump" this person QT'd is. Wasting milk that's already on shelves as a stunt. Entirely an op not worth defending (kinda like the Khmer Rouge).
They look like zoomers. I don't think it's a deliberate op, but I do think they fell for an op that basically says anarchy = NO RULEZ ALL CHAOS :joker-dancing: instead of reading some history of successful communist agitation
Ehh, this is kinda how a lot of animal rights and vegan activism is. I don't really have any alternatives to suggest, but this time of "activism" is super prominent in this field. It just feels like it doesn't work and just makes people mad (and there is a whole bunch of psyops and misinformation about veganism and animal rights activists).
I just assume many animal rights orgs have faced infiltration by agents working on behalf of the meat industry. There's no real reason why corporations can't also do clandestine cloak-and-dagger bullshit like government agencies.
Yeah the PETA undercover exposes are more effective because they not only inconvenience the treats, but they also benefit others by freeing the animals and/or shedding light on the abuse and making people feel bad. But these kinds of stunts only inconvenience the treats without benefiting anyone which is easy to ridicule. My personal opinion would be taking making a big scene of taking animal products and walking out without paying and handing it out to customers for free while expressing the message. Maybe the customers will care about the message, maybe they won't, but it's likely that others will have a harder time trying to paint you in a bad light.
For real, if somebody gives me free stuff to spread their message I always take the time to hear them out. Hasn’t backfired yet because chuds never do it anyways.
The store is just going buy more milk giving those factory farms more money and torture cows to get it. Also minimum wage workers will just have to clean it up, probably making them resent the activism.
I can't buy an can of corn for less than $2, but I can get a pound of ground chuck for $4.
The Khmer Rouge shit is the nightmarishly operated factory farms which couldn't exist without endless government cash.
These farms might not be able to exist even with government money, given the skyrocketing cost of potable water. But you'll still have assholes like this screaming "Don't make me eat the bugs!" and blaming Big Spinach in another five years.
Actually a thing. The science behind spinach iron absorption is flawed and pop-eye plus ad campaigns covered this up. Yes it has tons of iron. No you’re not absorbing a meaningful amount.
Other plants are better for that. It is tasty though.
like yeah meat has magical fucking vital energy that makes it THE ONLY WAY to get certain nutrients
definitely
Well, this is a lot easier to defend than saying "Change is inconvenient"
Since they're committing a crime anyway, why don't they just steal all the milk and hand it out for free instead of wasting already existing food :biden-alert: are the microplastics inhibiting critical thinking already
