For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Count of Monte Cristo (2024), the new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 novel of the same name. Edmond Dantes is locked up in an island prison for a crime he didn’t commit; for years, he plots his escape, and proceeds to exact his revenge on the men who framed him. This is the highest-rated and most popular film so far of director duo Alexandre de La Patelliere and Matthieu Delaporte, and has been getting some awards buzz, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is My Winnipeg (2007), a genre-busting documentary that sorta recreates the upbringing of director Guy Maddin in Winnipeg, a lone city in the vast icy wasteland of central Canada. Fantasy, comedy, and reality all interweave as Maddin both re-enacts events from his childhood while also offering lessons on various episodes of the city’s history. This is one of the highest-rated Canadian films on Letterboxd, and Maddin’s best-known and best-regarded works to date.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:
