        He's mildly better in some cases (or was? I mean, he expressed favorable views of Cuba some time ago, which are still criticized by the reactionaries to this day...). But yeah, that gap is awfully thin, to the point where you can just barely see any daylight a lot of the time. Like, imagine only retroactively praising Barbara Lee for being the only Congress member to vote against the invasion of Afghanistan. Too little, too late....

        I mean, Bernie is no Eugene Debs, but I think it's still possible to foresee him being Eugene Debsed if he's too critical of U.S./NATO/Ukraine/war now or in the near future....

            I guess it's a matter of whether he thinks he can afford to have those spicy takes or not. I mean, he should've been far more critical and even scathing of the party and of Biden at many different points along the way. But no. 🤷

            (It occurs to me my earlier comment might've been taken as a defense of his take. Though it was a somewhat charitable supposition—a "maybe he's a leftist on the inside, but does it really matter?" sort of possibility—no: it was not meant as a defense or justification.)

        Bernie has always punched left on foreign policy. The extent to which he has ever been good on it is that he theoretically wants to reduce military spending, spend that same money on social programs. His big stand against the War in Iraq was predicated on saying what we should do with the money instead, that we should go with the existing inspection process, etc - not a single word against the genocide the US was already carrying out against Iraqis by destroying their infrastructure and the using starvation sanctions.
