My working theory is that many if not most Americans are in some way suicidal due to a mixture of the classic fascist hero death worship, and suburban madness, as your life is a boring, monotonous, lonely wreck and you're deeply unsatisfied even if you have to pretend you're not in front of your neighbours

the wave of zombie apocalypse movies and shows in the 21st century was interesting. all about organized society collapsing and people taking life into their own hands while fighting a human-scale threat they can outwit and outmaneuver. it's an escapist fantasy that appeals to atomized people, and if they weren't so atomized it might manifest as a desire for revolution.
We have a generation of young people who grew up playing Fallout and the message they took away from it was, nuclear was is based and I get to be a hero after the bombs fall.
Damn, I just liked the cool ironic 50's vibe and that you could stab people with Occam's Razor.
