On this day in 1911, Magonistas, Mexican anarchists drawing from the ideas of Ricardo Flores Magón, took the city of Mexicali in the first of battle of the Magonista Rebellion of 1911.
The Magonista uprising was an early incident of the more broad period of unrest known as the Mexican Revolution. It was organized by the Liberal Party of Mexico ("Partido Liberal Mexicano", PLM), and was successful in northern Mexico; the Magonistas controlled Tijuana and Mexicali for about six months.
The capture of Mexicali began in a pre-dawn raid on January 29th, 1911, when 30 rebels, guided by José María Leyva and Simón Berthold, seized the town of Mexicali without resistance. They opened the jail, killed the jailor, occupied the barracks, and confiscated government office funds.
Other settlers joined the rebels as well as many foreign socialists and anarchists, mainly militant members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), including Frank Little and Joe Hill. The U.S. government in Calexico and Yuma offered military support to aid the Mexican government's efforts to suppress the rebellion in order to protect hydraulic works of American engineers.
Although the rebellion was launched against the rule of Porfirio Díaz, it was was put down by forces loyal to Francisco Madero, a wealthy landowner who supported reforms and became the Mexican President in 1911. The PLM split into factions, with one faction still supporting the incarcerated Magón brothers while the other faction supported Madero, the new president of Mexico.

About 7% of Americans currently have long Covid, which can affect productivity and ability to work, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Holy shit, what an astounding number of lives ruined for making sure shareholders aren’t inconvenienced.
I'm autistic too, totally seems like something I'd 'do'. Wouldn't even worry about it with other NDs (though you could send them a message to clarify IG), but is something that NTs would misunderstand to be a complaint of sorts.
cw transphobia
Experienced some pretty serious transphobia and management just doesn't give a shit
:pain: I'm just so fucking tired right now
Have a hug. You don't deserve that bullshit. :meow-hug: :trans-heart:
Trying to watch Equilibrium. It's a movie where the government has made it so people can't feel emotions. But you're constantly distracted thinking "well what was that if not an emotion?"
It's the dumbest movie. The plot is dumb, the fight scenes are dumb, gun kata is dumb. Somehow it's still a watchable action flick.
Does John Wick count as gun kata? I feel like it's the same basic concept but with choreography focused on making it look grounded and believable instead of fantastic and stylized.
It's extremely dumb and I love it. Using guns to do Kung Fu was such a stylistically cool decision. The costumes are terrible. The acting is generally pretty bad. But who doesn't want to see Christian Bale doing gun kung fu to destroy a bunch of cops to save a puppy? It's John Wick before John Wick.
Ultraviolet is another movie by the same director. It's a colorful, extremely dumb, extremely fun action movie full of neat special effects and Milla Jovovich in improbably tight clothes. The bad guy is an evil medicine pope. The fight scenes are so dumb but so cool
Milla Jovovich really has been in some of the most fun bad action movies of the 21st century.
Come out! It's time to file your taxes!
I HATE TURBOTAX I HATE TURBOTAX
these sneaky fuckers change their UI around a little bit every year to try and catch you not paying attention so they can bilk you for a hundred more dollars than they already are. Like the only reason your stupid business exists is because you've bought off enough Senators to prevent them from passing the bill that would let the IRS just sending out checks/bills themselves.
The total number of two-or-more-syllable words my 2.5yo daughter can say clearly is probably less than forty, but as of tonight, thanks to a joke my wife made, one of them is 'cocaine'.
checking out some hogwarts legacy preview stuff and wow the magic looks boring - looks like they just lifted the star wars laser blasts from the movies lol
man I remember dumbledore and voldemort dressed like pimps throwing snakes and shit at each other and making statues come alive in the books. they don't even keep anything interesting from the original story in any of this shit bro
i mean, the movies got rid of it first. and the later books did too iirc. all the fights eventually just become a few dozen people using the gun spell on each other
nothing wrong with not having any rules for your magic system if it's not what you're focused on, but harry potter is in a magic school!
yeah! have you listened to the shriekcast? because they spend a long time going in on this in the later books
I need some good material to dunk on this game before it comes out, a mostly apolitical friend was saying it looked kinda cool the other day and I need to convince him that it in fact sucks ass
I mean if he doesn't care about the trans stuff then everything about the goblins looks pretty bad. Gameplay wise, the game just seems like a perfectly bland experience - wander around an empty, mostly uninteractive castle and do some repetitive combat (sneak around for 75% of the mission stealth killing baddies, shoot some basic laser combos for the rest)
the game just seems like a perfectly bland experience - wander around an empty, mostly uninteractive castle and do some repetitive combat
Skyrim is one of the most popular games ever. This will not deter g*mers
cw transphobia
We had a sit down with management and my coworker just lied and denied most of the things they said to me. Management is more interested in keeping bodies at this job, so we could either continue working together or I can leave my department
Fuck all right wingers
I am stuck for now at my job cause the money, it will be hard to find another job of similar ease with similar pay.
cw this is pretty bad
At one point my coworker pointed at my genitals and said I will always be a man until I get it cut off. Work determined this was regular harassment instead of sexual harassment so it's all good to them
"oh it's just regular harassment, nothing to worry about" is the most absurd normalization of harassment I've ever heard.
I've left less toxic workplaces than that straight into unemployment with my only regret being that I stayed in those jobs too long.
I am sure a local labor lawyer would be interested in taking with you about it.
