That's one of the things that frustrated me the most. Shifting from "they're a bunch of drunk idiots who are using rusty century-old guns lol bazinga" to "They have hypersonic and thermobaric missiles they're going to kill us all".
Like Azov tweeting "Go home russians no vodka here" and then begging for help when mariupol gets fucked up.
The West has always had this view of Russians and by the West I don't mean comrades of sound mind who don't hate Russians or those Westerners likewise, however they've always seen us as subhuman and lesser in quality as far as society, culture, and generally backwards. I think their underestimation is based on their own prejudices and the Pc racism thereof.
