I hate how liberal idealism is used to dismiss any attempts of a material analysis. Liberals refuse to differentiate between what is true and what is morally good.
Western expansionism as well as hostility towards Russia certainly aggravated the situation. So did far right Galician nationalism, discrimination against Russian-speakers, "decommunizstion" and the stupid decision to transfer Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR.
You can tell all of this to liberals and it won't matter. They will just scream "That doesn't justify evil Putin's evil invasion!" like if the purpose of the conversation was to convince some sort of referee about which side was morally right and should be awarded the victory.
The same liberal delusions leads them to obsess about rules and procedure. They believe that they will "win" by virtue of having the moral high ground and not by possessing and wielding power.
