"Special operations" is propaganda nonsense. The Russians invaded a sovereign nation, which is an act of war. They may or may not have had a legitimate causus belli. I saw somewhere that they acted under some UN provision of "Duty to protect" the people of the DPR and LPR. But they're at war. We're not the Russian state media. We don't have to use their language. This is no more a "Special Operation" than the US war in Vietnam was a "Police Action".

Yes. it's propaganda to legitimize a military action. But it's just propaganda. State actors dance around the term "War" like it makes a difference whether civilians were killed by a war or a police action or a special military operation. It's war. People are dying. It's the most horrible thing that can happen. Trying to dress it up as something else is dishonest and should be condemned.

And yes, Ukraine is waging war on it's Russian speaking minority and has engaged in actions that may fit the definition of genocide, and has certainly engaged in actions that have historically been the first steps towards genocide.

There Is No War But Class War, and radlibs who added Ukraine emoji flags to their twitter page are denying it everyday with their worthless idealism

Not the issue at question. I'm discussing only the use of propaganda terminology by people here who should know better.

On the contrary, peole here are much more often on the "invasion" extreme of the "invasion" - "operation" - "liberation" spectrum, I bet without even noticing.

Putin should have gone up to Azov and told them to "Cut it out!" right? Russia and the Donbas republics already tried diplomatic solutions for eight years, the shelling continued throughout. The Ukraine government was either uninterested in peace or unable to control parts of their military.

I mean they did. They spent 8 years trying to get Ukraine to comply with the Minsk 2 agreements.

                    carpet-bombed western ukraine

There's no need or benefit to using US-style strategies. Russia pinned down the Ukranian army in the west and (probably) destroyed their ability to redeploy to the east. Destroying civilian infrastructure benefits the US because they can then use the IMF to put the country into debt bondage. Ukrainian civilians are blameless in this, the Ukrainians voted for a candidate that promised peace with Russia and the Donbas who then did a full 180 and escalated the shelling and attacks instead. I even have sympathy for the common soldiers since about eight years ago they refused to start shooting and running over their countrymen in the Donbas. That's why the post-Maidan Kiev regime started using the fascist paramilitaries we have now, because they were willing to follow orders kill anybody.

Which city bombings in particular are you taking issue with? Mariupol has been the city most heavily shelled but it's part of the Donbas and Azov was heavily entrenched there. The fuel and ammo depots that were bombed in other cities would have been used by the Ukrainian military to try to reinforce the forces in Donbas. Ukrainians are reloading their artillery in malls, mustering infantry in schools, and encouraging every man, woman, redditor, and child to become partisans. Russia can't do anything about the Ukrainians shelling Russian occupied areas without shooting back, that's just what war is.

So just invade the parts of Donbass that weren't controlled by the DPR and LPR, while facing the full might of the Ukrainian military in that small area?

Charter of the United Nations Article 51

This will be important once the hot war is over, I think it was Ritter who explained the legal argument for the „special operation“.

„Collective defense“ or something is what they where invoking. So it’s not just propaganda but there is legal background.

In Russian-speaking infosphere Roskomnadzor has attacked several western-liberal media outlets, accusing of, apart from fake news about shootings/bombings, calling the special military operation "war". Some people dunk on it by calling it a not-war, or by substituting war for it in all other contexts, e.g. talking about a start of World Special Operation 3 :19::84: . However, you can see that this is the official stance and so official channels, many Putin stans and some simply cautious outlets have complied.
