Their only mistake is to trust EU way too much, should pull off all reserve whether it's dollar or Euro
The gas for rubles scheme is a really neat piece of diplomacy. Russia achieves all of their objectives by giving their opponent a face-saving way of giving in to pressure.
They aren't even giving europe a way to "save face" they are giving europe a loophole to break USA's sanctions. The USA is more than aware of what this really means and they are pissed but the other option is telling Europe to freeze their citizens which would just turn the citizens against their own governments.
