For this Friday Movie Night, first up is 12th Fail (2023), an Indian drama about a guy from a poor rural village preparing for a fiercely competitive exam to join the Indian civil service. As the title suggests, he has already failed at academia numerous times, and so, cheating, subterfuge, and good old-fashioned hustling all ensue. Currently ranked #61 on IMDB’s Top 250; it is also one of the highest-rated Indian movies on Letterboxd. It is the best-known and best-regarded film to date of director Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

After that is Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), a family tearjerker about an old couple is who is forced to move in with their middle-aged children after their home is foreclosed. Their family does not appreciate the disruption they cause, and would rather they leave/ Don’t Be a Dick to Seniors: The Movie. Director is Leo McCarey, who is otherwise best-known for The Awful Truth (1937) and Going My Way (1944); this is arguably his magnum opus, being widely considered one of the best films of the 1930s. Currently ranked #242 on Letterboxd’s Top 250.
