Martin Luther King Jr., born on this day in 1929, was an American Christian minister and activist who became one of the most visible leaders of the U.S. civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
On October 14th, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize the Selma to Montgomery marches. In his final years, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty, capitalism, and the Vietnam War.
For his activism, King was the target of multiple assassination attempts, arrested 23 times, and surveilled and harassed by the U.S. government. In particular, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover targeted by Dr. King by making him a target of COINTELPRO, a secret program where FBI agents spied on, infiltrated, and attempted to discredit "subversive" political movements.
In 1968, King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference organized the "Poor People's Campaign" to address issues of economic justice. King traveled the country to assemble "a multiracial army of the poor" that would march on Washington to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience at the Capitol until Congress created an "economic bill of rights" for poor Americans.
Before the plans for the march could come to fruition, however, King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee while supporting striking black sanitation workers. James Earl Rey was convicted for the murder, but speculation of government involvement has persisted for decades after his death.
"I submit to you that if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live."

I just remembered Michele Malkin in 2004 or 2005 being like "we cannot end the war on terror by making deals with moderate Muslims any more than we could have ended WWII by making deals with moderate nazis" but it turns out that "making deals with moderate nazis" has been pretty much the cornerstone of (if not the full extent of) the US's Western Europe policy since 1945 lmao
I had a knife in one hand a carrot in the other and I just came SO close to eating a knife
remembering Jeremiah Wright's amazing sermon bit about how MLK has been reduced to a soundbite instead of his incisive critique of capitalism and imperialism, ended the bit by saying "King said 'I have a dream,' Barack said 'I have a drone.'"
I am vaguely aware of a cancellation of some sort, but I listen to "Pod damn america" purely for the god-tier opening. Wright has to have a dump-stat, because his charisma is off the charts.
MLK Jr. has become a shell of his once revolutionary image. Now his ghost is prattled about to remind people nebulously why racism is bad and to vote for democrats. If that's not bad enough, they use his image for commercial products
cw: domestic violence, murder
a man in utah murdered his wife, mother in law, and 5 kids and his wife's family wrote a statement that defends guns and the second amendment. only in america https://twitter.com/shannonrwatts/status/1614081794852409344
"We would caution media outlets and the public at large about using our family’s story for any advocacy of political agendas. Protective arms were purposely removed from the home prior to the incident because all adults were properly trained to protect human life. This is the type of loss that will continue to occur in families, communities and this nation when protective arms are no longer accessible. It is our desire that the media turn their attention to the weightier matters surrounding this event. In place of political advocacy, we would encourage reporting about the value of all human life, the great works of God that can render a forgiving heart, how religion can heal and enlarge our capacity for love, and a return to foundational principles of peace within our nation. The reality is this tragedy serves as a call to the memory of God, religion, freedom, peace, and family and the efforts that are required to maintain those freedoms."
this reminds me of the person who survived a school shooting whose own father eventually wound up believing that it was a false flag/crisis actor situation (here). living in america makes people lose their minds
Neoliberal capitalist society disorder should be added to the next DSM
Guess what, up until 2020, many southern states celebrated Robert E Lee Day on MLK DAY. VA combined the two into one “Lee-Jackson-King Day”
