It was mainly western leftist downplaying this

Go back and watch Grayzone interviews from January with people in the DPR, they were calling it and saying a war was coming.

The western left wasn’t ready to make a full throated attack against NATO imperialism on behalf of Russia, so instead they hedged by denying anything was happening at all

Ukrainians were also disbelieving. 3 days prior to invasion, Aljazeera reports only 20% of Ukrainians thought invasion was imminent: "https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/2/21/why-ukrainians-dont-believe-in-war-with-russia-distrust-west"

It totally made sense in hindsight, but I had no experience with US intelligence that was actually accurate so I couldn't believe it

US intelligence wasn't accurate - they declared a couple different invasion dates, and they were wrong. Joe Biden was the only one correct when he said an invasion would happen "this week" the week it happened.

It seemed to make absolutely no sense in terms of Russia's geopolitical interests. Zelensky and the Ukrainians said they weren't expecting an invasion. The people hyping it up were all proven serial liars.

I don't see how it couldn't be expected if all the conditions were there. None of Putin's concerns were addressed all these years so I don't think he'd go "Eh don't worry about the NATO or Donetsk thing, water under the bridge".

Everyone just expected American hegemony to continue, usually ignored nations have to suck it up and deal with it (like Cuba or Iran). Only Russia and China have the might to make their demands forcibly known

France too, but only if they don't go against America obviously.

absolutely no sense in terms of Russia’s geopolitical interests

Except the interest of making NATO look impotent by putting them in a position of being totally unwilling to make any sacrifice to actually act. It's really hard to beat an enemy that is used to a much lower living standard / hardship level.

Yeah, but that seemed to be outweighed by the negatives of turning Ukraine into another Afghanistan right on their border.

I didn't think it would happen until the Ukrainians starting shelling Donbass, then I was like nevermind it's gonna happen

I was following my general belief that nothing big and decisive ever happens and that everything is just a series of tiny nudges back and forth with a long-term tendency towards things getting slightly worse.

I still think I'm generally right but I was completely and totally wrong on this one.
