Plato (l. 428/427 - 348/347 BCE) is the pre-eminent Greek philosopher, known for his Dialogues and for founding his Academy in Athens, traditionally considered the first university in the western world. Plato was a student of Socrates and featured his former teacher in almost all of his dialogues which form the basis of Western Philosophy.
Born Aristocles, son of Ariston of the deme Colytus, Plato had two older brothers (Adeimantus and Glaucon), who both feature famously in Plato's dialogue Republic, and a sister Potone. He is known by the nickname 'Plato' which, according to Diogenes Laertius (l. c. 180 - c. 240 CE), was given him by his wrestling coach because of his broad shoulders (in Greek 'Platon' means broad). His family was aristocratic and well-connected politically and it seems Plato was expected to pursue a career in politics. His interests, however, tended more toward the arts and, in his youth, he wrote plays and, perhaps, poetry.
After abandoning his literary pursuits and devoting himself to Socrates, even throughout his trial and execution, Plato wrote the foundational philosophic works of the ancient world which would go on to influence world culture. The three great monotheistic religions of the world owe much to Platonic thought whether directly or through the works of his student and friend Aristotle (l. 384-322 BCE), whose teachings remained consistent with Plato's vision of the importance of caring for one's soul and maintaining a virtuous lifestyle even though Aristotle would depart from some of the specifics of Plato's philosophy.

they do but I think the last time anyone used them for an air target was like 30 years ago (holy fuck the gulf was 30 years ago)
The guns on the f-22 would probably jam knowing what a pos the fighter is so the missile is safer.
I heard there was a plane designed such that when its guns were firing, the bullets were heavy enough and propelled quickly enough that the plane would actually move backwards. This was from like 6 years ago.
The A-10s gun has an effect like this, but that thing's a monster. The F-22 and F-35 both still have cannons but they're much smaller - ironically the reason they probably couldn't have shot the balloon down with the cannon is that it was too slow, the gun works best on something that's moving at about the same speed the shooter is.
Both the the F-22 and -35 still have guns, but using them requires getting real close which just isn't a thing that happens anymore.
It was one of the 4 hidden balloons in Diddy Kong Racing that are only capturable by plane.
New Megathread Nerds!!! :eu-cool: i have to learn about greek philosophers and now you will too!!!!

You can't make me learn shit :blob-no-thoughts: I will forget everything I read here by tomorrow

I'm being sexually harassed at work and this guy is likely going to end up back on the streets because he won't stop calling me cutesy affectionate pet names after me repeatedly telling him to stop.
In my weakness, I did not react nearly strong enough to his pushing of boundaries. He gets told off for calling me sweetheart, so now he does so but immediately apologizes and asks not to be kicked out. Today I gave him his mail and he responded with "I love you girl, oops I said a bad word please don't kick me out."
I reported it to my supervisor and he said that he would talk with the guest about it. He did, guest denied everything but received his warning. Now I'm anxious about tomorrow because I know he's going to use this as another time I got him in trouble for "being nice" and he'll be sure to tell all his friends in shelter and ramp things up in his interactions with me.
Like bro you have to realize that this ends with me kicking you out in the cold, and I've already been way way too lenient.
It's complicated. When you provide necessary services to marginalized or mentally unwell people you have to accomodate bad behavior sometimes because even annoying people deserve not to die. There is a line ofc and nobody should have to worry about safety at work but its not like working as a barista or insurance salesperson, there are serious consequences for booting someone from a halfway house, shelter, or denying them medical care, social services, education, etc. It's a difficult situation
I literally developed acute heart problems the last time I did a job search from all the stress, lack of sleep, and drugs I was doing
200+ applications, 40+ interviews, 20+ take home assignments
Thats so many hours applying to jobs as you grow more and more desperate
Diogenes biggest dunk on Plato is being remembered. Imagine being a self-serious philosophy guy, spending your life building an edifice to truth, beauty, and knowledge; and then finding out the guy in a barrel outside of town is chronicled alongside you in the history books.
I think it is a mischaracterization of both to say Plato didn't have a sense of humor and Diogenes wasn't a serious philosopher. Plus, pretty underwhelming dunk when one had their writing recorded and kept so we can read it today and the other only exists in anecdotes about a freaky smelly guy
Plato once defined a man as a "featherless biped," so Diogenes showed up to his academy one day with a plucked chicken and said it was a man.
Plato then swiftly added 'having flat nails' to his definition thus conclusively winning the argument and becoming the greatest thinker of all time
Sure call the guy famous for being a massively hench nude wrestler a nerd
Someone just pointed this out, but the F-22 program cost nearly $70 billion, and popping the balloon was its first ever air-to-air kill.
And it used a missile and not it's guns which is just easy mode. I would have been impressed if they pulled off the shot in that piece of shit flying guillotine.
That's a million that won't go towards healthcare, housing someone, or feeding someone instead of just firing a burst of a couple dozen bullets.

Destiny fans are mad with me for disputing the "Fidel Castro was a billionaire" myth.
All I've gotten are Marvel quips and "is it so hard to believe a dictator is skimming money from every industry in the country?" After I showed them an article that said, "For another controversial dictator, Fidel Castro, we assume he has economic control over a web of state-owned companies, including El Palacio de Convenciones, a convention center near Havana; Cimex, retail conglomerate; and Medicuba, which sells vaccines and other pharmaceuticals produced in Cuba. To come up with a net worth figure, we use a discounted cash flow method to value these companies and then assume a portion of that profit stream goes to Castro“
It's just a huge assumption and then speculative math to come up with his alleged net worth. But nobody has disputed what I said with solid evidence and instead choose to downvote and quip.
HIs fans on Reddit have merged with Neoliberal and EnoughSandersSpam to create the most insufferable people online. I'm a glutton for punishment and sometimes kick the hornets nest.
It makes sense that he's growing on Reddit with how astroturfed and war-mongering it's become. Thankfully, Reddit seems to be the only place he's growing. I know more people offline that know Hasan than Destiny or Vaush.
Edit: I just looked it up and holy shit, Reddit is tiny compared to other social media sites. Only 52 million regular visitors and I think a total of around 3-4 hundred million overall. No wonder it's so easy to astroturf.
Don't even bother disputing it, just talk about how Fidel was the greatest gigachad of all time with a giant dick who fucked more women than all of them have put together
There's this thing where people literally cannot imagine a leader not motivated by naked greed. Wtf would castro do with money?
Wtf would castro do with money?
even if he was motivated by greed, this is the big sticking point
what do rich people do with money?
they buy very nice things, like yachts, houses, fancy cars and the like
where would he hide them if he did buy them?
i think the people of Cuba would notice Fidel wandering around wearing gucci or driving a maserati
What's the point of shooting down the balloon when it's already passed over America lol.
Got bored and started reading the Wikipedia article on Mormonism and damn is that some crazy shit. Like, the reward for being a good Mormon is becoming on the same level as God and getting to make your own universe. It really feels more like its own religion than a branch of Christianity
Pretty sure they ret-conned the "you get your own planet" thing. But yeaj they're not really Christian by most ways you count.
Wikipedia mentions a 2010 pamphlet that says
after death exalted adherents can "develop a kingdom over which [they] will preside as its king and god."
On a related note, it's pretty funny how much of what Mormons actually believe is based on whatever bulletins they're putting out in a given year. Very fake religion
“Chinese spy balloon” that was in all likelihood a weather balloon
