The Pole of Inaccessibility research station (Russian: Полюс недоступности) is a defunct Soviet research station in Kemp Land, Antarctica, at the southern pole of inaccessibility (the point in Antarctica furthest from any ocean) as defined in 1958 when the station was established. Later definitions give other locations, all relatively near this point. It performed meteorological observations from 14 to 26 December 1958. The Pole of Inaccessibility has the world's coldest year-round average temperature of −58.2 °C (−72.8 °F).
It is 878 km (546 mi) from the South Pole, and approximately 600 km (370 mi) from Sovetskaya. The surface elevation is 3,724 meters (12,218 feet). It was reached on 14 December 1958 by an 18-man traversing party of the 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition. Its WMO ID is 89550
History
Equipment and personnel were delivered by an Antarctic tractor convoy operated by the 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition. The station had a hut for four people, a radio shack, and an electrical hut. These buildings had been constructed on the tractors used during the traverse, serving as accommodation. Next to the hut, an airstrip was cleared and a Li-2 aircraft landed there on 18 December 1958. The outpost was equipped with a diesel power generator and a transmitter. On 26 December the outpost was vacated indefinitely. Four researchers were airlifted out, and the remaining 14 members of the party returned with the tractors. The station was deemed to be too far from other research stations to allow safe permanent operation, so it was left to be used for future short-term visits only.
The 8th Soviet Antarctic Expedition visited the site on 1 February 1964 and left five days later.
The American Queen Maud Land Traverse reached the Pole of Inaccessibility from Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station on 27 January 1965. The crew were flown out by a Lockheed C-130 Hercules on 1 February. On 15 December 1965 a new American crew arrived by C-130 to make observations, refurbish the snow cats, and continue the Queen Maud Land Traverse, zig-zagging to the newly installed Plateau Station, where they arrived on 29 January 1966.
The 12th Soviet Antarctic Expedition visited the site in 1967.
On 19 January 2007, the British Team N2i reached the Pole of Inaccessibility using specially-designed foil kites.
On 27 December 2011, during the Antarctica Legacy Crossing, Sebastian Copeland, and partner Eric McNair-Landry, reached the Pole of Inaccessibility by foot and kite ski from the Novolazarevskaya station, on their way to completing the first partial east–west transcontinental crossing of Antarctica of over 4,100 km (2,500 mi).
The station building is surmounted by a bust of Vladimir Lenin facing Moscow. As of 2007, it is almost entirely buried by snow, with little more than the bust visible. Following a proposal by Russia to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, the buried building and emergent bust, along with a plaque commemorating the conquest of the Pole of Inaccessibility by Soviet Antarctic explorers in 1958, has been designated a Historic Site or Monument (HSM 4).

I have determined badempanada to be a revisionist after he decided to shit on Frenzal Rhomb and all australian music yesterday
The Yeonmi Park memes are making so many people reconsider what they know about North Korea it's actually unreal. The power of posting is incredible
I would like to thank @Biggs for being a very cooperative and polite boye while me and my brother wiped his eye clean earlier
Two thoughts on the topic:
First, What an amazing story, wow. I am humbled.
Second, If -56C and 600 kms is “inaccessible” why in the fuck are we thinking about colonizing mars
why in the fuck are we thinking about colonizing Mars
We aren't, that's all hash
Ok so idk how to put this concisely but.
:a-guy: is basically a meme right? He's the funny mail guy, the technology bad man, he "got MKULTRA'd" and all that.
But as far as reading his basically only bit of writing, people just know the opening line, right? And after that it kinda just melds together into a platitude of "some good ideas, he saw technology bad before other people, not good to maim and mutilate secretaries though."
And I'm pretty certain of this cause very few people seem to reference that his first specifically stated gripe is that universities are going woke, basically. And also later that civil rights movements are invented by activists that don't have real problems, and that chronically ill people should learn stoicism and shit like that.
And there are other people like this who have one actual bit of writing that's famous to them and gets referenced, but no one seems to like, really read.
Valerie Solanas for example is basically kind of just a girlboss and that's it, and the transphobia on page 1 of the manifesto isn't really commonly known cause no one bothers to read it.
So I'm curious if there are other people like this who exclusively exist as kind of semi-serious cultural references and memes, who are more symbols than someone who anyone cares to engage with intellectually.
The Unabomber manifesto reads like a modern shooter manifesto but by a Harvard grad who can articulate their thoughts instead of just using memes and FBI statistics.
I think Gaddafi exists in a similar space where he's well known for his cult of personality or Pan-Arab/Pan-Africanism while the Green Book gets mostly forgotten
Stirner kind of exists like this but he doesn't really have the semi-serious factor that those examples have, he's all meme except for terminally online adherents.
There are other theorists who get referenced by someone that clearly doesn't read them, but they either aren't culturally relevant or have a dozen pieces of written theory that it's not as obvious or funny if someone has read jack shit.
If there's one thing transitioning has taught me, it's that cis men have no clue what to do with a door when a woman approaches
I hold the door open and tip my hat to all the ladies that come in, m'am m'am m'am m'am :brace-cowboy:
Am I the only one that holds doors for everyone regardless? Is this not a generally polite thing to do?
Best to avoid any controversy by simply closing it. Even safer if you can then lock it.
havent smoked weed in 4 days so my dreams have gotten so vivid and I just wanna say, fuck having dreams. my subconscious is seriously deranged
Chuds thinking the Mario Movie is some kind of anti-woke statement will never not be funny
Especially because they were complaining about woke girlboss Peach up until the minute the box office numbers started coming in
Peach wore her motorcycle suit from mariokart and apparently got to do more than just sitting around in distress. that's the idea they got from the trailers anyway. i haven't seen the movie
It is about an Italian man's attempt to break up an inter-racial marriage and protect thr monarchy so maybe
Carry pepper spray when you're outside if you can. Set up some kind of camera where the chaos typically occurs if possible. The dog will likely learn not to fuck with you if you spray it once, and you'll want some kind of video evidence because the neighbor will probably call the cops.
Yeah that's a shitty situation. If the neighbor is uncooperative, you are very limited in options that don't involve calling the cops, and we all know that brings a huge risk of the dog ending up dead. I guess you could threaten to call the police and not actually do it, but who knows how she would take that.
With that much aggression and a nonchalant owner there's a good chance the dog ends up dead regardless.
