Faye Schulman, born on this day in 1919, was a Jewish partisan and photographer who took up arms against the Nazis who were responsible for killing her family.
On August 14th, 1942, the Germans killed 1,850 Jews from the "Lenin" ghetto (named after Lenin, Poland, where Faye was from), including her parents, sisters, and younger brother. Faye was spared for her ability to develop photographs, and the Nazis ordered Faye to develop their photographs of the massacre. Later, she cited taking a photo of her dead family in a mass grave as the impetus to take up arms.
During a partisan raid on the camp, Faye fled to the forests and joined the Molotava Brigade, a partisan group mostly comprised of escaped Soviet Red Army POWs. She was accepted because her brother-in-law had been a doctor and they were desperate for anyone who knew anything about medicine. Faye served the group as a nurse from September 1942 to July 1944, even though she had no previous medical experience.
During another raid on the Lenin ghetto, Faye succeeded in recovering her old photographic equipment. During the next two years, she took over a hundred photographs, developing the medium format negatives under blankets and making "sun prints" during the day. While on missions, Faye buried the camera and tripod to keep it safe. Schulman is the only known Jewish partisan photographer from this era.
"I want people to know that there was resistance. Jews did not go like sheep to the slaughter. I was a photographer. I have pictures. I have proof."
- Faye Schulman
After liberation, Faye married Morris Schulman, also a Jewish partisan. Faye and Morris enjoyed a prosperous life as decorated Soviet partisans, but wanted to leave Pinsk, Poland, which reminded them of "a graveyard." Morris and Faye lived in the Landsberg displaced persons camp in Germany for the next three years and immigrated to Canada in 1948.

Watched Gladiator 2 last night on a CAM release
spoiler
Movie sucked; did a Star Wars Sequels thing of 'Somehow, the empire we defeated 16 years ago has returned' and most of the cast was returning from the original in the exact same plot as the first. Just awful. I didn't think Denzell did a great job at all, and his veneers outshined his performance.
My spouse and I had a better time with the subtitles that were generated by AI apparently. It randomly renamed some characters: Gracchus == Crackers, Macronus == Macronuts. And various other translation errors.
I put my foot down on this movie and said 'we're not gonna see another stupid unneeded cash-grab sequel' and glad I did (not pay for it). Beetlejuice 2 was the last one we saw and it was also awful (and we paid for it)
👎 company is now fully on-board the Microsoft sharepoint train, meaning there is a “Home” section where you can see the date and time each person in the sharepoint group edited or opened a file
Just finding new ways to do surveillance at job which is unequivocally bullshit lol
I posted a story on my IG (i know i know why fucking use meta) about Kamala's disastrous drop in support and an acquaintance linked me one article about how republicans were using propaganda so it's not her fault, and she actually wanted to end the war. And I'm trying to find a calm and nice way to say that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were both rabid imperialist dogs and nothing else.
I recently collected all the books recommended/mentioned by Matt Christman into my library app and I'm listening to Nixonland and it is so good. I miss Matt so much in these times. I loved his stroke of genius poem (Will got me a groan out of me for that one).
Anyways, thinking of listening to his cushvlogs or getting that essay collection when it comes out.
the initial release PS3 is backwards compatible with both PS2 and PS1 and can play blu rays so that is definitely a high value purchase imo
Back when backwards compatibility meant the computer engineers used black magic to fit an entire Ps2 chipset in the console somehow.
I think one of the tragic things I saw in my life that didn't involve a break up or death was, um...
One of my friends really got into competitive smash bros (brawl? Idk). Max special interest. Did not stop talking about it. Only watched, didn't play as he didn't have the appropriate console
Came by some money and bought a wii (or switch) and smash bros.
He wound up being terrible at it. Pretty much ended the interest and involvement there. The console gathered dust.
He wasn't doing great at the time even before spending money on the hobby. I don't think he really deserved that experience.
I think about it about once a year.
Been reading through The Trial, and I feel scammed by all the "kafkaesque" circlejerk cause this is not a depressing book at all so far.
The protagonist is such a weird little neurotic smug asshole that so far I literally get the impression he could just get his case sorted with the court if he didn't spend a whole chapter stalking his neighbour after sexually harassing her.
Guy just keeps self sabotaging for no reason, he gets to his interrogation an hour late even though he realises that he was not told the time and that he could probably call them back to ask for it. He never feels like it would be wrong to call the courts to ask for his appointment, but he thinks it will embarrass him in front of one of his bosses, so he just decides it's not important.
Really just a weird fucking guy, you get the impression he's actually definitely the kind of guy who might have been reported for something real.
Kafka famously kept his neighbors awake because he laughed so hard while writing deep into the night
Like he tells the court that he discards his right to further interrogations, then realises it could be a bad idea and just tries to Larry David his way back by showing up next week like nothing happened.
What a goofy moron, I love this shit.
Ate some cheese that seemed sketchy even though the date was dec 4 wish me luck
I had two week expired yogurt yesterday and didn’t realize until after the fact 🥲
Very cool thing to name yourself in a children's game. No report function available.
ShowAbsolutely stunning photo of Faye Schulman in December 1944 with her partisan group:
ShowTruly one of the realest ones
This is a great topic. I love reading about Jewish resistance to the Axis.
WTF is up with dude on the left's muzzle discipline? Like yeah there's a pretty woman but his finger is on the trigger and he's pointing it right at his buddy. Fuck me.
