My coworker half-jokingly half-seriously is thinking about volunteering for Ukraine. I told them it’s not worth it to get blown up by a Russian cruise missile, and all they did was talk about how good Ukrainian air defense is.
It’s so good that planes with engines evolved from late-WW2 Nazi turboprop studies were overflying Ukrainian cities on the opening night of the conflict. Nothing says “I have my airspace under control” than fucking prop engined strategic heavy bombers cruising around like they’re in international airspace.
Yeah morale was pretty good until today. No one thought the base would get bombed due to its proximity to Poland, but after not having any warning of inbound missiles (there's alarm systems all around the base for that), no effort of anti aircraft measures, and then no issuing of weapons when the base was potentially under threat for an attack a lot of people were really just left feeling like no one stands a fucking chance, especially when things get real bad in Kviv.
Bro I had fucking thirteen cruise missiles drop on me this morning I am not fucking around. I saw them pulling bodies from the wreckage, I was blown on my ass, I can tell you that the air raid siren did not go off meaning the legion has little to no radar support and absolutely no AA capability. We were at the mercy of Russian warplanes.

I radioed for help but no one on there spoke English (only a few of us in the unit spoke any Ukrainian but I wasn’t one of them). I had to pull up Google Translate on my phone but it was severely cracked from all the debris from the explosions. I was able to translate “I need the Ghost of Kyiv at [coordinates]” (I had to use Google Maps for that). I don’t know what the Ukrainians replied with, but I sat in the ditch waiting for an air strike on the location for about 30 minutes but nothing happened.

I stopped by a guy on the ground - I think he was American - to grab the radio given to us. I think he assumed I was trying to save him because he gestured me off and said “leave me, just go!” Anyway, I did go and ran for about 10 minutes and hid in a ditch.

It's extremely weird how during the Syria crisis, the UK simply didn't have any room for any refugees fleeing from war, we were full up, but now that Ukrainians are fleeing from war, there's plenty of room for them to come! Theresa and Boris must have built a ton of houses between now and then!
